Sub woofer and stereo replacement

I've got a 94 softdash classic and have changed the headunit.

I left the sub woofer disconnected as I remember you need to do something prior to wiring it up.

Can't find it on search - did I dream it?

I've never heard of audio equipment needing anything like that, but I couldn't say for certain - I take it it's not the same system as the pre-softdash Range Rovers? That definitely doesn't mind being unplugged and hooked up again.
