To paint or not to paint

And the item in question is an 8274 winch drum.

It had a some surface rust which I've clean off with a wire brush in a grinder. I'm now wondering how to stop it rusting again. Is painting the drun a good idea or not (or just a waste of time)? Will the paint quickly get rubbed off by the rope, and/or will the paint effect the rope gripping on the drum?

Any thoughts or experinces?

Paint it, but don't put too much effort in - it'll only come off again fairly quickly.

If you have the requisite number of turns on the drum it wont affect the rope's grip - the capstan effect will easily overcome any potential smoothing effect the paint has over bare steel.
