slihp
I have read over a number of posts common issues with my model 2001 TD5 so thought it would be good idea to compile a check list for relative new beginners to the TD5 to use to investigate/rule out problems. I am going to add to this list as i find the topics i was reading but feel free for the more experienced owners to add to it, thought a good format would be 1) Symptom 2) Description 3) Resulution Ill start it of with Oil in the loom 1)Failure to start? 2)oil tracking up the loom from the injectors due to Capillary action. 3)drain, clean with brake cleaner, restrict oil flow Fuel in the Oil 1) 2) 3)
stuck
1) lack of power. 2) horrible clattering noise when you put your foot down. 3) remove pig iron & fit v8. Sorry, couldn't resist!
Anderzander
Mick You rambunctious individual When you have removed your unloved engine - I'll take it off your hands. 1) Pool of diesel under the engine bay 2) Failure of the fuel pressure regulator's on the back driver side of the engine 3) Buy a genuine replacement, grow an extra elbow and undertake the fiddly job of replacing it. 1) Won't start consistently - just clicks 2) Worn contacts in the starter motor solenoid 3) Buy the kits of ebay, saving yourself a fortune, and replace. Anderzander
Oil in the loom 1)Failure to start? I thought the main symptom of oil in the loom is a misfire ?

Les Henson
Fuel under the tank/ up the back door - fuel line abrasion on the rear chassis. Fuel inside drivers rear wheel arch - water sensor or fuel filter seal failure. Fuel under starter motor/ gearbox bell housing - fuel pressure regulator diaphragm split. Mistfire at 2000 revs and above - injector wiring loom. Air suspension problems - a lot of people convert to coils PAS pipes (where they cross the front crossmember - corrosion causes leaks. Rotary oil filter cover - 10mm bolts snap off or round off. Level sensors break - due to the rubbish plastic the arms are made from/ pivot point on the radius arm siezes. Engine cover on the drivers side - the 13mm bolt spins, but doesn't come undone because of the flimsy lock nut it goes into. Les.
slihp
so what is the fuel in the oil issue?
landy andy.
Either injector washers, or the more serious issue of cracks in the cylinder head. Andy
Tanuki
Symptoms: 1) Whining/screaming/gurgling from fuel-pump 2) Misfiring/loss of power 3) Non-starting, or engine starts & cuts out. Cause: failure of copper injector-seals allowing combustion gases into fuel-rail/fuel-pipework. Cheap to fix, but don't leave it too long or it will destroy the fuel-pump (£500 to fix). Symptoms: 1) Engine responds very lethargically under all conditions. Cause: Wastegate stuck open. Easily fixed by putting a graphite/moly-based lubricant on the wastegate spindle and 'exercising' it manually. Symptoms: 1) Engine runs well, but switches into 'limp-home' lethargic mode during full-throttle acceleration. Switching the engine off and restarting restores normal power until the next period of full-throttle use. Cause: Wastegate stuck shut. Fix as for 'wastegate stuck open'. --Tanuki. bigbeast
sorry for dragging this back up but heres one to add.. the famous 'oil pump bolt' 1) loss of oil pressure 2) knackered engine 3) remove sump..remove offending bolt, apply loctite 242, torque to 25Nm, refit sump mainly on early Td5 99-01, however cases have been noted up to 04reg for the bolt to have no signs of threadlock check at the ealiest opportunity if in doubt or your next oil change

bigbeast
'water in fuel' known problem with the fuel water sensor coming on despite the filter containing no water 1) warning lamp illumination on dash 2) faulty fuel water sensor / contamination of sensor 3) remove sensor, clean all faces and electrode with clean cloth and refit if cleaning fails, the sensor is most likely goosed and needs replacing

GL88
The main problem I find with my TD5 is the unbearable drone it seems to provoke in owners of Land Rovers of some models with other engines!!!
