This Is Not Good Is It ?

I took the front diff out to find out why the four studs either side of the diff opening in the axle casing were too short to take a nut and found this instead !

PIC00070.jpg

Three of the four allen bolts holding the middle part of the locker had come out and the fourth was about to leave.

The diff pinion appears to have some chips to the teeth although the crown gear appears undamaged. The locking clip for the actuator has a couple of mil shaved off the back of it and the input bearing has some cage damage.

There were also these in the diff pan

Is this a rebuild a job that I could do or is it a job for Mr. Ashcroft ?

Quite like the design of the curtains/bedspread/duvet cover in the first pic. Bit faded though - are you planning on replacing them soon? Neighbours might already be commenting on it m8, perhaps wifey has been 'having a headache'? Not one to pry, but maybe if you got those filthy Land Rover bits off the soft furnishings, your dinner may not be in the dog quite so often.

This isn't really the place to be airing your marriage problems anyway.

Buy a Ford Escort Cabriolet, and she will love you forever.

Les. :D

change crown and pinion wheels or get another Diff,

so why were they too short anyway?

K898KOR has some diffs.

i paid £25 for one without a centre, going rate about £75 fully fit etc with all bits.

Thanks Les, I always like to spread my landy parts over the bed, lots of room to work then, you see. I do however always turn the duvet cover inside out first hence the faded appearance :)

I thought it'd mean a new diff, is swapping over easy enough, don't you have to do shimming and measuring and stuff ?

The short studs ? Erm, I got sidetracked James, so I don't know yet !

Crownwheel and pinion are a matched set IIRC? so it would mean changing both... ££££

Never done one but yes there is an element of buggering about with shims I think if you are setting the pinion height.

If the allen bolts in the locker have come out I think you'd be advised to strip that down and check for internal damage too. I've never seen one in bits but it seems that it ought to be checked rather than lob it all back together and hope for the best?

Time to talk nicely to Dave A I reckon!

Hi,

you are welcome bring or send it in and I will have a look and give you a price,

hopefully the ARB is OK but apart from the bolts the cross pin looks to be poking out a little too far, hope all is well inside there, this wants stripping and checking. The ring and pinion may 'dress up' once the high spots are ground off but it depends how much damage they have.

it may be a good idea to put in a set of bearings as they are not dear and will have had some debris through them also,

the rebuild of the locker is sooooo easy - just done two of my own.. its the putting it back in the diff casing thats the hard bit...

it should take more than a couple of hours to totally dismantel and clean and reassemble.. (the actually diff that is)

however you will need to get the spare bolts and the lock tabs (which are one use only objects) my last diff did exactly what yours is doing, apart from my one .. pretty much exploded.. (lack of maintenance).. :D

give it a go see what happens.. you can always buy another one later if all goes wrong.

Update : I have a replacement diff lined up so I'll pop that in for the moment and rebuild the lockered diff when funds allow (paying Mr. Ashcroft heaps of money out of my holiday paypacket would not go down well with the senior member of the household ;) ). Thanks to all for your recommendations :)
