BogMonster Posted August 16, 2006 Author Share Posted August 16, 2006 Damn I have been rumbled No actually I want it to assist with hitching up my RIB trailer single handed, otherwise it is only a matter of time before I end up with an impression of a NATO 76mm eye in my back door, you have to get the trailer ring right over the hook and then lower it on the jockey wheel as the bluddy trailer noseweight is about 1/2 ton I think... no way you can lift or move it anyway! Yes I know I should learn to reverse in a straight line before anybody points it out Some sort of mirror is another option but a camera appeals to the gadget nerd in me, however the gadget nerd is a tightwad when shopping for things he doesn't really need and Mr Bowyer's 200 squid is a bit over the top Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I find it is great for doing exactly what you want, especially if you mount it low down enough to look up... er, oh, wrong forum. **Ahem** I have put my camera in the PTO hole so I can see the NATO hitch in the top right of the screen. I can get the trailer ring exacly over the hitch every time, and if you set the trailer height slightly low, you can bump the ring into the hitch so it will definitely engage when you let it down - after all, you don't want it to slip sideways...! The camera is powered off the lighting circuits so switches on and starts broadcasting once coupled up and the lights are on ( I tow with the side lights on ) The receiver sits next to the rear window and i run a cable up to the front directly into an LCD panel. Whole setup works really well. tiagoc Posted August 17, 2006 Share Posted August 17, 2006 the cheapest way would be a laptop and a webcam (they are very cheap, nowadays). it could be used for other things, too (like store and share the photos of passing girls with other people gps) an addon to that would be a 7 or 8 inch lcd (touchscreen or not), like the lilliput. these are also getting cheaper RV sites have some kits for backup cameras. Maybe it's a good idea to check those. But expect to see more professional kits, and more expensive, of course! If you plan on using it with not-so-good lights around, check the camera's sensitivity. This won't be a problem if you have good lights when reversing, and you can save a lot by not having one of those very sensitive cameras. The panel I have at the moment is a 7" widescreen touchscreen VGA doodah. Its nice and big, but nots particularly bright in sunny considtions. I've got a 45 degree mirror which clips on to the reversing cam which gives a good view of the tow ball. I also have a camera looking at the front winch. Both have been useful - particularly when you bust both your wing mirrors and have a long drive back from Wales! Get the waterproof bullet cameras with LED's for illumination. The LED's work better than my reversing light! I've been thinking about adding a wireless one which I can clamp to the chassis to find out what that interesting clunkinggraunching noise is! michael calvert Posted August 17, 2006 Share Posted August 17, 2006 if you look in some commercial vehicle magaxines - truck and driovber or commercial motor they do compklete kits for about 250, brand new maybe even fitted - i no youd be able to do that yourself though, if you speak to them though there are options for two cameras (maybe more) so you flick a switch and watch rear winch/front winch or towballs what ever. landmannnn Posted August 17, 2006 Share Posted August 17, 2006 You could get a second hand camera phone, mount the camera bit at the back of your vehicle with the screen on the dash. I was thinking of type with the camera on a swivelling bit, motorola I think. A bit of soldering and wire of course.
