Beware...Daft Inter-cooler question ahead

Recommended Posts

Calling the Gods of all things turbo charged,

I was aimlessly reading an article the other day that suggested that performance could be enhanced by upgrading the inter-cooler of the 200tdi engine and then went on to list manufacturers of uprated inter-coolers.

I thought I would just have a peek at the range on offer on the net (not that I intend to fit one at the moment?) and was taken back by how much they cost .

The question is couldn't another more efficient inter-cooler be fitted from a scrapped modern car?

What would determine other than physical space whether you could use a modern I-C from another vehicle?

Has anyone used an I-C from another vehicle?

Did it work?

Cheers

J

to get a performance increase the fuelling has to be tweaked to take advantage of the extra cool airflow,

just changing the IC for a bigger item won't give hardly any performance increase just lets the engine have more cool air to suck in.

I have heard of some people fitting standard TD5 intercoolers onto TDi's however reviews are mixed, whilst in theory they have a larger cooling area; due to the inlet/outlet pipes being on different sides, the extended pipework can reduce the potential gains.

It might be worth looking on ebay for uprated car versions, i.e escort rs as above. Prices seem to start at just over £100 and it's simply a case of finding one with the right dimensions and modifying the pipework.
