darryloh
Hi everyone, my father bought a 2004 td4 freelander a year ago. as soon as i drove it, i noticed a whine (a bit like mud terrain tyres sound) this has bugged both of us, so changed all 4 tyres for new, noise still there.....so we removed the rear prop assembly, noise still there.....so we just left it off for this past month, now we have a heavy vibration through whole car, which comes and goes, it seems worse when acclerating, the gear lever shakes too. the original whine is still present. we also checked the wheel bearings, all good. could it be the IRD? or the actual gearbox? any thoughts gratefully received! darryloh
oh, and just to say have spent 2 hours searching site, not found anyone with same problem, seems most people remove prop due to seized vcu, and theyre cured, but not us.... tim_roberts
Did you only remove the rear section of the prop? Try removing the rest of it.

nickcc
Sounds like either the Diff pinion bearing or the IRD gears or bearings may be the problem, if you are getting a bad vibration through the gear stick I would think it more likely to be the IRD. darryloh
Well the problem is solved, it was the N/S/F inner CV joint, lots of play, changed whole shaft with both CV s and its back to normal, happy ending, thanks for your input guys! nickcc
Glad you found the problem, thanks for the reply as it could point other members in the right direction. Many replies are guesswork, bit like asking the Doctor to diagnose you over the phone
