bushwhacker
I have been hunting some MTF 94 and found this vendor the cheapest, smith and allen they sell on ebay. I need to do 2 LT77s and a R380. Is this the correct stuff? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251008059852?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#shId I hope the link works. Jon White
No - both types of gearbox should use ATF either Dex II or Dex III Jon
Ratty43
I thought MTF 94 was specifically designed for the R380?
pongo
R380 is defo MTF94, NOT ATF.
dirtydiesel
R380's really like ird (freelander transfer box) oil, really helps gearchanges. my old mans disco was bought at 99k with a dead 2nd gear syncro, it baulked every time first to second. flushed the gearbox with red diesel, refilled with ird and it very very rarely baulked. gearbox lasted until 201k when he sold the disco. Phil Hancock
MTF94 for the R380 for sure.
ejparrott
R380 = MTF, not ATF!
vulcan bomber
a shade under 3 litres a gear box is required. R380's like mtf94, however some honda and BMW boxes like it as well, it isnt made just for the R380. Atf for the LT77, however i believe land rover now recommened it to have mtf. BogMonster
Early R380s had ATF in them, LR changed to MTF94 in maybe 1996/97 or thereabouts? So either will do, but they recommend MTF (which they would, 'cos they sell it). I have tried MTF in LT77s before and I thought it made the gearchange worse but that's just me. Sirocco
MTF has gone up in price lots. I got some LR MTF94 from the indi around the corner for £20 about 3 years ago, its now £35 booooo G
bushwhacker
I knew I would get differing views on this after hunting down MTF 94. Yes a shade under 3ltrs in each and 1ltr for top ups. I had read MTF 94 could now be used in LT77 and R380. If anyone knows better I am willing to listen. The stuff I located is it ok to use and at a fair price? May I suggest that it could have done that if you had also put in MTF94? Maybe it just needed an oil change?

BLRC in Saintfield had it in 5ltrs for a raesonable price last time I was down - but that was 6mths ago, it does come in under different names, do a google and see what uo can get - I think it may have been texaco or redline or something? I never had any success finding it locally and the postage didn't make it worth whilst. Steve
FridgeFreezer
Freelander gearbox oil *is* MTF94 isn't it?
finnarne
I buy Texaco MTF94 here in Norway. Good (for me) to see that some of the prices in Norway is lower than in UK. Although when I bought MTF at a LR dealer, i paid ~20£ a litre, I now pay a lot less for the equivalent Texaco MTF94.
bushwhacker
Stevie D thanks I will give them a call, been there too many times. The ebay vendor I think has no charge to NI ? I will check it out further. It was a google search that lead me to MTF 94 but with no definitive answer, (maybe there is none). I just thought it was a more up to date oil so why not try it. TSD
I've had fully synthetic Castrol (SMX-S ?) in my R380 for the past 50k or so. I recently changed it to MTF94 from Smith and Allen and the gearchange is massively improved.

Haven't we all! http://www.ebay.co.u...1423.l2649#shId it has gone up in price - I paid £20 +vat for a LR branded 5ltrs 2 years ago - ouch! Mind you normal engine oil etc has rocketed too in line with the price of a barrel of crude!
