Hybrid_From_Hell
Ok The 5.2 has a problem with water temp gauge The gauge reads F Hot when Luke warm which is not much use. Prob is the gauge is a 1985 pulsator 3.5 V8 and the sender is a Thor unit ! Erm "slighted match alert" My thoughts on swapping to the original sender is a non as its location is blanked off and to drilled and tap it would be inlet manifold off time - no way ! Hold for current sender = same problem so have been thinking of new gauge Was wondering about Joys of mechanical vs electric and options in fitting ? Tip of the list is to cut into the top hose with a nice joiner with a sensor in it and a me matched temp 52mm gusher to replace the 1985 one ? Thoughts ? How accurate would A top hose mounted gauge be - which is hottest top or bottom hose ? I am never ever able to remember !! Or shat other ideas had the collective got Discuss Nige
western
A SPA or VDO gauge with a matched temp sender would be the quickest/easiest to fit, wouldn't want a mechanical temp gauge with hot coolant in a small bore pipe in the cab. mmgemini
Go SPA. Sit down before you see the price, them maybe a whisky to recover afterwards..... I can't fault mine, especially the way it reads. Also you get the adjustable warning light with it.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Whiskey sounds a fab bonus ! Where would the sensor mounted ? In the top hose a la adapter idea ? Will look at spa lovely kit a la race parts I am ok with something a tad spendy when I think how important it is and what it's monitoring ! mmgemini
Nige. Where is your sensor fitted now ? I fitted mine in the same place on my 300Tdi where the original was fitted. Temperature gauge sensors are 1/8" NPT fitting. This is the one I have fitted. http://www.spa-uk.co.uk/(S(mawsgdrttmq3tmux242phulc))/design/productdetails/default.aspx?objid=215 I suggest you get the analogue gauge as you can see the needle move !! If you set the needle vertical for "normal" running you don't need to remember the last place it was.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Hmmm Thats defo Single Malt time Whats the thoughts around the top hose for mounting sensor peeps ? ? Nige
mmgemini
Like you I can never remember which way the water flows HOWEVER As most car manufacturers fit the sensor near the top of the engine....I'd go for the top hose.
Retroanaconda
That's a nice looking gauge. Shame they don't make it with a green backlight to match the rest of the gauges VDO vision do one that offers that functionality. Still an expensive gauge, but not quite the SPA money. RedLineMike
this is what i have on my truck nige, had one on my previous truck also http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DURITE-WATER-TEMP-GAUGE-52mm-IDEAL-FOR-BOATS-0-523-23-/290772946308?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_BoatEquipment_Accessories_SM&hash=item43b36b0d84

You can't see the needle move as much with those as a full face gauge.
zim
Nige, i can't remember what your engine looks like. But is the hose after the thermostat like in the 'older' style ? If so, you need it in the inlet area before the thermostat. FWIW, all my gauges are stack. G
reb78
That's a nice looking gauge. Shame they don't make it with a green backlight to match the rest of the gauges My thoughts too. I emailed them a while ago and blue and red are all they make IIRC.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Zimbabwe Think of v belt or serp same set up really What's with issue if top hose ?? I also have a ghermostatic sensor in rad base for fun switch - wonder about an adapter / t ing into that ?? Nige
TheRecklessEngineer
You want the sensor before the thermostat - in the top hose won't be much good as it'll be giving you the temperature of the water going to the radiator, not the temperature of the water going round the engine. Hybrid_From_Hell
ERm <thick mode on> BUT If its Ferkin near boiling whats the difference the thermostat isn't going to be closing is it ? <thick mode off > ?? Nige
zardos
You could put a temp sensor in heater matrix output hose as this will always see the water flow (as water never just goes around the engine, it always leaves the engine, with the thermostat closed the only route is via the heater matrix and then back to the rad bottom hose and to the water pump)
