OrlandoDefender
Hi everyone! First, want to thank you all as I have been reading the forum for a few months now and learning quite a bit. Pulled the trigger on my dream truck. Its a 1984 Defender 110 RHD made into a crew cab with the LT77 and an Isuzu 2.8 td. Have a few questions about the truck. Forgive me for how basic they are. What is the size of the fuel tank? How much oil do I use on the oil change for the 2.8? Also what is the best type of oil to use? any idea of oil filters that will work? Rear crank seal is leaking, any ways around pulling the tranny and transfer case to stop it? Also the reverse gear is having issues. If I put any gas while in reverse it will pop out of gear. Tried the reverse light switch fix, but it was to no avail. All the other gears work great and I can deal with it for the time being, but if there are any other suggestions I would love to hear them. Thanks for any help and grateful to be part of the land rover community! Cheers! David
western
110/127/130 fuel tank is 80 litres or 17.5 UK gallons, as the engine is a non LR unit, might be best to get the correct workshop manual for it, reckon it would be fine with 15W/40 oil try adjusting the reverse gear plunger, info in LR workshop manual. filters I suggest local motor factors, take the engine number with you, there might be part numbers/makers names on the existing filters. Maverik
Cool truck, I presume as its a RHD you imported it? the older trucks are the best If you haven't already, you should follow some of the links in the tech archive to downloadable parts.workshop manuals, always a good first stop for info. OrlandoDefender
Yes, bought it from an English gentleman in South Florida who spends half his time in FL and half in GB. His girlfriend has decided he needs to buy and home and thus was selling two of his 3 defender he brought with him. Having a blast driving it around although need to figure out a few things to get her running at peak. Thanks for the information Mav, I will go ahead and do that. Somehow filled up 18.3 gallons at the gas station yesterday, must have been running lower than I thought. Here is the official "To Do List" 1. 3" straight pipe 2. Intercooler 3. New rack 4. 4 new 31s 5. Sand and repaint/refinish body 6. Mount old jeep seats in the bed 7. replace rear crank seal 8. possible rebuild on tranny
CwazyWabbit
Nice to see you are enjoying the Landy Looks lovely, you should put some more pictures up. BTW You'll fit 21 US gallons in the tank (but I'm sure you worked that out)
Spearos
Welcome! Nice truck! I had a Trooper with the 2.8 engine a few years back - great engine! IIRC it takes quite a lot of oil, about 6/7 litres. Lots of info here: http://www.itocuk.co.uk/ HTH
OrlandoDefender
Thanks for the info guys! Here are a few more pictures. Will post some more as I take them! One more question. Is the 1984 all time 4x4? It seems when I put the transfer case in N the clutch does not engage. Is that normal? When in 4H it drives fine. Thanks for any help on this! Happyoldgit
4H you will get drive. 4L you will get drive. Neutral on the transfer lever is just that - neutral with no drive to the propshafts and axles no matter what gear you have selected on the main gearbox. CwazyWabbit
Yep, it's AWD when in high or low on the transfer box and if you push the lever to the left it will lock the centre diff (a warning light will come on), only lock the centre diff when the ground is loose enough to allow the wheels to slip or you will get transmission wind up and may damage something. When disengaging the centre diff lock you may need to bugger about a bit to get it to disengage if your transmission is slightly wound up, usually reversing a little will do it if it's stuck.
