Can an R380 g'box reverse light switch be overhauled?

Hi, All,

The title says it all. With the ignition ON and in reverse gear I've got power at one side of the switch but none at the other side. This appears to be a failed switch. The W/S manual doesn't indicate that any adjustment is possible, either on the switch or within the g'box, but does anybody know if there's a common failure mode for the switch, and if there's any remedy, other than a new switch? Many thanks, in advance, for all ideas.

Mike

It's likely to be the tip of the switch not getting pushed in far enough. Unscrew it. If there's a washer, remove it, and put it back in, without one, using some sealant instead. If it's got no washer, get someone to machine a millimeter of the face that sits against the gearbox, and refit.

When it's off, and before fiddling with the switch, you can make sure it "makes" at all. It's a 19mm spanner job, and a pain in the backside to get to (more so on a Disco, than a Defender).

Disco1tdi and Maverick,

Thanks for the advice, guys. I've had the switch out this morning, and yes, it is a PITA to get to, and there's no continuity across the switch, no matter how far in I push the actuating button. I guess it's fubared. I've put it back in, so I can continue using the vehicle, and I'm ordering a new one from Paddocks. Their photo of the switch has a Bearmach background, so I hope I don't end up with a Britfart item.

Western,

Many thanks for the link. LRSeries show two listings for AMR3918, one marked "Genuine" and the other "OEM". Do you know what the difference is, apart from cost, and which do you recommend?

Paddock also shows two items for AMR3918, one with the suffix LR, shown as being made by Land Rover. The other, at under a quarter of the cost of the LR part, most likely is a Britfart, or similar, knock off.

My LR Parts Manual shows the reversing switch to be Part No. CDU51, which is the one shown by Paddocks with a Bearmach background, but it is still priced only just above the cheaper AMR3918 option. Is this the same item as AMR3918, or do you know what the difference is, please?

Your help is much appreciated. Thank you.

Mike

I may seem to be overly worried about the price, but I really do want to get the correct part that will last. The cost difference will be insignificant by the time it is shipped to me in Canada!

the genuine one will be in a LR box as you would buy it from a main dealers parts dept, the OEM would be from the original manufacturer who make it for LR, there shouldn't be any actual difference between the 2 items,

the CDU51 number is a old ROVER/MG part number. in your case I would go for the genuine LR part which will have a 12month warranty of it's own.
