Maverik
I don't think there was any when I took my rear axle apart...
farmer_ben
ahh right ,what holds the oil in then ? I done my brake shoes at the weekend and noticed that one was weeping oil from around the half shaft :s
Maverik
The oil acts as the lubrication for the wheels bearings, the half shaft rubber cap, drive flange gasket and wheel hub bearing oil seals keep everything in... (hence a nice smooth stub axle sealing face is rather critical) if i remeber rightly the oil leve isn't actualy up to the level of the stub axle shaft hole, the oil is transfered through just with "splashing" and its transfered through by running down the half shafts to the end if that makes sense? I'm sure I've read about guys on here, actually removing the stub axle oil seal to allow a better axle oil transfer into the hub to allow proper lubrication.
