90200tdi
Hi, Quick question about the Gwyn Lewis or other twin alternator mounts on 300TDI, is the fan belt driven from the viscous fan pully or dose it take drive from the crankshaft pully ? Boris113
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Twin-Alternator-Mount-300-Tdi-Defender-Discovery-2nd-Alternator-Mount-WARN-8274-/170763994213?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27c253c465 In this version by Gwyn Lewis, the pictures make it look like it's driven by the viscous fan pulley. You could always ring Gwyn, I've found him to be really helpful in the past.
oneandtwo
They drive off the timing cover pulley whic the viscous hub threads onto, using the belt routing intended for the aircon compressor, although they have a proper tensioner strut not like the aircon setup with an eccentric pulley
Fivespddisco
Why would you want a 2nd alternator?
zardos
For me having electric winches which in theory can draw up to 2500A means that having a second alternator slows the battery drain when using the winches. It also offers some redundancy.
Bowie69
Also, if you fitted a 24V one you can run a second 24V battery, which halves the current draw to winches etc, so you can get away with smaller cables or enjoy the lower voltage drop

SPendrey
Back on the topic... the Gwynn Lewis pic shows the 2nd alternator pulley with a number of V's free, meaning the belt used is probably the air con one (4v's) instead of the normal aux belt which is 7v's. The aircon belt is driven off the crankshaft (bottom) pulley.
vulcan bomber
Why would you want a 2nd alternator? Simply put, its the best split charge around.
Fivespddisco
Thank you every one for the answers. I was guessing it was winch related.
