David Sparkes
Using wheel barrows to move stone into a washout in order to effect a repair, it's to repair damage caused by water flow, rather than overenthusiastic use of throttles. David Sparkes
It appears the wheelbarrows were part of Plan A, or possibly Plan B. When we arrived on site the Supervising Ranger explained they were now on Plan F!! He had trailed a Quad behind his Company car. When unloaded the trailer became the wheelbarrow into which the top group shovelled stone. The ranger drove the quad to the downhill group, who then spread it around at his direction. The downhill groups dug several runoffs into the verge, and created bunds to divert any water flowing down the track into these run-offs (locally known as 'grips'). They also filled the central gully that had formed. In all this they were aided by a small (18"?) Wacker plate. I expected trouble with this on the significant slope, but when pointed uphill the Wacker walked itself forward, settling the stone as it went. A surprisingly successful day, considering how few turned out (10am to 'sunset'). Sunday should see double the number in attendance, so hopefully it will be the last visit for a couple of years. I can only suggest people sign up as Volunteers on http://www.treadlightly-uk.org/ It isn't a recipe for Spam every week. As explained, people need to be adaptable, and have an open approach to working with others. Regards
