Fogy1
Hello Everybody, hope you all had a good Christmas, I have been thinking about swapping my transfer box off a Disco onto my Defender for a while now, but I have not really been looking recently, but by chance one has come up so all well and good so you would think. Now don't get me wrong I am no expert on land rover but I am learning every day since owing mine for just over a year. I spoke to the seller he told me it would not fit my defender as it was a mk2 disco I needed a earlier version? ( linkage problems he said) I have a 2002 TD5 and the donor disco is a 2004 Td5, I was sure they would be a straight swap is this true or is there a bit more to it. Thanks for any help. Orgasmic Farmer
They are not the same. The TD5 Discoverys lost the Difflock. On some the difflock mechanism was completely removed (especially early models 98-03), on others (ie later ones) the mechanism was in the box but there was no linkage (but it can be retrofitted). Since there must be thousands of cheap MK1 disco transfer boxes out there which will bolt straight on it probably isn't worth the risk of buying a TD5 one which ends up giving you no difflock. Have a lock on Ashcroft Transmissions website for more info.
Orgasmic Farmer
I may have got that the wrong way round! ie later ones had no internals while earlier example did (but had no linkage) Check out this info. If the TD5 box you have been offered is one of those listed then walk away. http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=
