bluespanner
Can I get away without an oil cooler? Or does it desperately need one for some reason.
discomikey
you can get away without one, but why? if you work it hard, without an oil cooler you will get high EGT's which aint really too good for the engine, im running with the cooler blanked off for now as my filter housing broke, and i swapped it for a series engine filter and housing. but its not ideal for how much i work it. and youve gotta think.. if it didnt really need one, why did Land Rover put one in? okay, they tested them in pretty extreme conditions, but nothing that couldnt be achieved by one of us.. p.s. i take it this is for some kind of engine conversion? western
the turbo charged engines have oil coolers to help cool the turbo bearings/engine oil to keep the overall temps in a desired range, if the oil cooler is removed the result could be overcooked turbo bearings & other engine damage. miketomcat
Because the rad was in the back of the tomcat I used a copper tube zig zaged several times behind the intercooler worked well in fact BMW use this system on there cars i would however change the oil more often . Phil Hancock
Dont forget if you remove the cooler and blank the ports on the filter head you must remove the oil stat in the fliter head.
bluespanner
Why is that Phil?
Spongie
as the oil wont be able to circulate around.
western
the hose will have to be removed & the ports on oil filter head blanked too, removing or leaving the oil stat won't make any difference
Spongie
Scrap what I said last, was misreading the post I think.
Phil Hancock
the hose will have to be removed & the ports on oil filter head blanked too, removing or leaving the oil stat won't make any difference With the ports blanked you are correct that it wont make any difference when the oil is not hot. But when its hot and the stat opens to divert the oil thro the cooler because it has been blanked off will mean that the oil flow to the engine bearings will stop or be very very reduced, result one toast engine. bluespanner
Do the question is, does the stat divert 100% oil to the cooler or does it just give it the option?
western
the stat opens @ 74 degrees, not sure how much [quanity] of oil actually flows via the cooler.
