gareth-jones
Hi all, Eight months ago I bought my second freelander, a 2006 TD4 Adventurer which began to whine after 50 mph, much like a worn wheel bearing.A few months ago I sought advice from profesional mechanics and changed front drivers side wheel bearings which made no differance. The whine now appears at 30 mph onwards and is louder on long sweeping bends to the left and to the right. I cant hear any knocking while reversing into any tight parking spots.I now suspect the IRD and intend to remove the propshaft to see if it will help. Any ideas? Freelaner
It could be the diff or vcu support bearings
gareth-jones
I had the problems with the rear diff and the prop bearings on the previous freelander, but this is a differanr noise.
FridgeFreezer
Drop the prop and go for a drive, see if it whines with no driveshaft. The VCU bearings do go, especially if used off-road, and the non-genuine ones are noisy out of the packet.
gareth-jones
Hi all, I`ve just removed the prop and fitted the plate to the IRD box - There`s no change !
FridgeFreezer
Happily, spinning a wheel to check the bearings is much easier with the prop off... Jack up each wheel & give it a spin. Also worth checking there's oil in the gearbox, rear diff, and IRD.
