A haynes book of lies story book manual, would be a fair place to begin, it's what I started with.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Defender-Service-Repair-Manual-Manuals/dp/1859601855

Then get yourself the old military pdf emers and the service manuals available all over the net. Think the service man is linked from tech archive.

What site do you recommend? I hate blindly downloading stuff from the net, you never know what kind of virus your computer might acquire.

could be a previous owner has filled it with the wrong fluid, or the main gearbox seals are allowing ATF through & mixing with transfer box oil, or the main box is leaking to outside & the airflow under the vehicle while in motion is dragging the ATF fluid back over the transfer box, try cleaning it off then run engine, while you look about under the vehicle.gearboxes.
