jameshub
I've been given a number of recommendations about best engine oil and filter to use. any recommendations?
western
any decent 15W/40 will be fine. as for a filter there's the genuine LR item or Fram, & various others, my tdi currently has a halfords filter fitted.

pete3000
A haynes book of lies story book manual, would be a fair place to begin, it's what I started with. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Defender-Service-Repair-Manual-Manuals/dp/1859601855 Then get yourself the old military pdf emers and the service manuals available all over the net. Think the service man is linked from tech archive.

western
ATF as used in Power steering systems, but NOT the stuff for Citroen cars. Castrol ATF is what I use. or you can use the later MTF94 fluid.

DC_
Sorry to drag this up again, I'm sure my transfer box has ATF leaking from it. Not EP90 like Ralph recommends..... hmmmmmm
western
could be a previous owner has filled it with the wrong fluid, or the main gearbox seals are allowing ATF through & mixing with transfer box oil, or the main box is leaking to outside & the airflow under the vehicle while in motion is dragging the ATF fluid back over the transfer box, try cleaning it off then run engine, while you look about under the vehicle.gearboxes.
