LDRover
I am after some advice on buying a Freelander TD4 around a 2005 SE or HSE model. But I am not sure if to go for a manual or Auto. I have a 200Tdi auto disco which is great to drive but it is not a every day car. Where the Freelander would be the main family car. So any info on how reliable the gearboxes are would be a great help. Thanks.

EggNChips
Auto....auto.....auto. Manual.....manual....manual If you really need / want an auto then go for it. 10% worse fuel consumption started to annoy me when I had one.
FridgeFreezer
They're both very good from what I've heard, I've got a manual but have a mate (who is a die-hard LR anorak) with a TD4 auto who reckons they're wonderful too.
bm52
I just prefer auto's especially in regular traffic. Also the labour cost of a clutch change on a FL is very high, I have heard it is around £1200? A member of my family recently had a quote on one and as a result is thinking of changing his 53 plate FL for a later auto version. Each to there own though. FridgeFreezer
Yes, clutch (including flywheel) is £1200 ish but being manual probably saves me that much in fuel at 30k a year.
Dorsetfreelander
I have a 2004 TD4 SE auto with 84K miles. Runs like a dream although it's a bit higher geared than a manual so often drops a cog when going uphill. Also don't forget that it's tiptronic so you have manual too.
