SPendrey
Black smoke is often attributed to overfuelling, possibly from 'tuning'. See this thread (http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=81708) and this link within it (http://www.landroverweb.com/Pdf-files/Tuning_Land_Rover_Tdi_engines_Rev_2.pdf). Could it be that the previous owner had been tinkering?
Bowie69
Could also be: Blocked air filter blocked intercoooler blocked inlet manifold Simple things first
bear
I'd go for the air filter first. Griff

ejparrott
I get the same, see my thread on 'gearbox rattle', We're thinking mine could be that the injectors need looking at.
Dean1989
Could be injectors not reflowing enough fuel back in overspill pipes giving overfulling smoke or could be like an above post says pump adjustment is there any signs of tampering on the pump or could be turbo seals ?
