Shock Turrets - Cutting off the top to lower them

Recommended Posts

I want to ditch my +50mm shocks on the front. I cannot get +50mm here so need a solution.

If i cut the top off the turret and weld it back on 50mm lower I can use standard shocks,,,, right ???

Any lunatic done this before ?

I lowered the rears top mounts in a similar way and have had no issues since Kenya.

Now where can I get them in Boliva....let me see.... the local parts shop....oh wait....there isn't one !

I was lucky to get an air filter from the compatible range or tractor filters.

If the shock turrets you have are +50mm then shortening them by 50mm will leave you with standard height turrets yes. Then you can use some standard shocks.

If you can get standard shocks from somewhere I would have thought they could supply other Land Rover parts. But I would imagine parts shops are far and few between out there yes. One in Cochabamba apparently!

There one here that sells some springs and shocks and they have a full range of Monroe and Gabriel and some other makes. I saw a yellow yellow and a white yellow on the shelf so they have LR springs in the shop.

Its not so much a Land Rover problem but a complete lack of part for Diesel cars....they don't have them here cos its all so high. Land Rovers are almost none existant.

Bushes and shocks should be no problem. I just need to get the turrets welded properly....they mostly don't do anything properly......

If the shocks do bottom out before the bump stops, they'll put a lot of stress on the turret tops - they may well punch the top out of the turrets ( have had that happen, which could be irritating miles from anywhere). Maybe consider checking and if necessary spacing the bump stops (box section?) to limit travel . Or, more radically than modding the old ones, fab up new turrets a la gwyn lewis design, just a strap up and over from the bottom ring, could be made of very strong stuff.
