yellowbeast
Hi, I have 300tdi 90 and am getting around 24 mpg. Does this sound about right? Thanks
Aragorn
depends what type of driving you do? If your doing 100miles a day at 60 on a dual carridgeway i'd say its pretty poor, but if its all local town driving and short journeys then its likely around where i'd expect. yellowbeast
A mix of both, mainly motorway. Also forgot to put its had a 2" lift running 33's if that makes a big difference thanks
bluespanner
I'd be chuffed with that. Cue lots of people saying they get 35mpg with a roof tent, simex, and a trailer on.
Bowie69
A pic would help, but a stock-ish 90 should be doing more than that if you aren't hoofing it around all the time.
yellowbeast
Haven't got one at the minute. But as I say the the only mods I know of are the tyres and the lift. And 35? And Defender just don't seem right in the same sentence...
landroversforever
I would have thought you should be getting more than that. I get 26 from my 90 running the old BFG Muds, no lift, external cage etc.
CwazyWabbit
What speed do you travel on the motorways?
yellowbeast
I'm lying I do have a picture.. It nots very good Due to me going on my phone. And 65-70 just keeping up with the traffic. Thanks
Maverik
Well I get a steady 28mpg out of my truck, unless I'm fully loaded and trying to keep up at 60mph - Its a 200tdi, with some bigger tyres, slight lift and I've got some bridging ladders bolted to the roof... Aragorn
big knobbly mud tyres will do fuel economy no favours!
yellowbeast
Oww i know the tyres wont help. But it seems 24's not too far out. Just though id ask anyway! thanks for all the replys

Yostumpy
you have hit the nail on the head with your own words! 65-70mph!!!!!!!!! and 33" tyres!!!!!!!!!!!!! for good milage you need to keep under 60mph closer to 56mph, and those tyres, are making the vehicle work a little harder, BUT also they could throw out the speedo calibration. Could be worth checking with gps or m/way markers that a mile isn't 9/10 ths of. and yes i HAVE HAD 35.3mpg out of wallace, but no roof rack and no rooftent and it is a 300 tdi 110. Tom1809
If you read his sig the 17mpg is a V8 90 CSW Wish my v8 got that, instead was 12 to 14 mpg on a good run and about 3 mpg if I really wanted to fly, but 120 mph in a defender is nerve wracking to say the least
mickeyw
Haha Barry is trying to wind me up My V8 90 on LPG and chunky rubber averages 12-13 commuting and general bumbling about. I have had 18 from it in the past, I was following a 2.5 NAD 90 to Wales Didn't clarify that our 110 was a 300 tdi, oh and driven my my mother. Not sure her feet are big enough to press the loud pedal all the way to the floor If you have larger tyres it can be worth altering the gearing ratios (trf box or diffs) to compensate. It can make for for relaxed driving and better economy

Big.Mike
Ha, I read the title of this thread as Defender, 90 MPG. I clicked on it eagerly hoping to see some fuel efficiency magic.

yellowbeast
Your making me feel better and how would I find out if the previous owner had tweaked the fuel pump as it seems to pull like a train compared to other 300tdi's I've driven? Thanks
Yostumpy
Your making me feel better and how would I find out if the previous owner had tweaked the fuel pump as it seems to pull like a train compared to other 300tdi's I've driven? Thanks Of course , if you put your foot to the floor , it will go well. Are you saying you want to achieve better milage? or are you saying you drive it hard , and is 24mpg about right in these circumstances? I am a bit confused. yellowbeast
No I was just wondering what other people get 24 is fine by me, a little better than I expected if im honest! And I just wondered if there was an easy way to see if the pump had been tweeked a little. Thanks
CwazyWabbit
if you remove the diaphragm from the top of the injector pump and examine the cone part you will see a witness mark where the fuel pin has been running. If there are two witness marks then it used to run on a different part of the cone and has been tweaked at some point, if there is just the one it is unmolested. Make a note of the position of the diaphragm before you remove it. In fact might be worth reading the tuning pdf file before you start so you know what I'm going on about. http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=76807&p=657258
