Mercedes om606 engine

Recommended Posts

On the pump choice, (I've counted Cummins 6bt Ve, 603 and 606 so far), and also for those of us (assuming I am not the only one!) who are considering this conversion for a useful power and torque (+reliability?) increase for everyday towing and driving (as opposed to creating a 'monster'!)..... it might be nice if we could summarise the possibilities together with the required mods so that we can ponder the availability and cost implications; for example given boyt's tip about ebay Germany I found these, ...

but with no Merc knowledge I have no idea whether they are workable options and what they might give power/torque wise in standard form and then ease/expense of mods etc.

Wha d ya fink??

The om603 pump number 6030700101 that's the Mercedes part number and Bosch 0400076884 these pumps are good and have an alda fitted as standard. The om606 na pump will need an alda fitted to stop smoke on no boost.

Well its a start, thanks boyt. Mind you the only one on offer at the mo costs more than the whole car at the start of this thread!

Dan, when the 6bt pump is described as 'doable' , I am guessing it will need a drive adaptor of sorts? Cheers Rob

Thanks for the info Boyt.

I'd already bought an E300TD to break for the stronger engine and contacted SMT AB to get the conversion kit for the hp22 autobox on seeing your post.

Also got an OM603 pump off ebay in the US and have asked dieselmeiken for a price to tune. About to order a turbo manifold from KKD Motorsport.

Read somewhere that the sump might need to be changed and that the correct one is available from Mercedes would you be able to help with a pn and a rough idea of the price?

Would need part numbers but I will pull up pictures of the sumps. Dieselmeiken should charge around 700euros for the rebuild. From my measurements On a disco you just need to notch out the front crossmember. The oil filer will be tight to the bulk head but you can make a relocation kit for this. Timing of the pump is really easy . Have a tool you put in the pump with two lights on. Time engine to I think 15 degrees after tdc and move the pump on adjuster to both lights are on.

The engine will be going into a buggy that was built to take an RV8 so hoping there's room. Engine position has been shifted back 9" but can be adjusted to suit.

The pump is already on its way and I'll try to call Dieselmeiken tomorrow.

Spoke to a specialist and found that the hp22 can take up to 400nm so should be ok for a while. I was a bit concerned so had to find out before going the SMT AB route.

Where would I get the same timing tool, sounds like I need it.

A stock hp22 will not take 400nm, a built hp22/24 hybrid box on redline oil with a massive cooler might just live!

The stock 606 makes 355nm, with a dieselmeken pump and a decent Turbo you are going to be well over 450nm

I cannot see even a lt85 or lt95 living for long behind a well fueled 606.

All good info regards the hp22, however I've had one behind the 4.6 for a few years worth of competition now and it's been ok so far. If it gives up I'll see if I can afford an uprated box from Dave Ashcroft.

I won't throw the one out of the car away though just in case.

Boyt, thanks for the offer. Let me pull all the stuff together over the next couple months and I'll give you shout. I'm running the merc as a spare car until the MOT runs out.
