j1mb0
Hey guys going to be refitting my hydraulic winch with a new line after finding some lovely bits of crushed wire a couple of layers down. So... I don't have the money to be spending on a lovely piece of synthetic rope so what diameter wire should I go for and any recommendations on suppliers would be great. I will be using the winch to do self recovery of a rather heavy td5 110 and recovery of other people stuck and dragging the odd tree in the woods etc Cheers guys. mikec
I had one of those a few years back, was going to fit to my lightweight but ended up going electric instead. From memory those winches aren't rated hugely I'd think 9mm would suffice but stand to be corrected :
j1mb0
Ah wicked I'm gonna strip the free spool side of things due to a leaky seal and a dicky spool lever. Anything I should know before I go? Was thinking a 10mm line. Should I go for galvanised or not? Read somewhere its a weaker line but could be wrong?

FridgeFreezer
Have you tried looking up the manual for the winch perhaps? The internet helps those who at least try to help themselves... I'm fairly sure the manuals are out there in PDF form. If it's anything like the other old mech/hydro winches they are rated by the wire fitted as they will pull hugely if allowed to. The F5000/525 manual says this. With smaller rope you'd need to set the pressure relief valve lower to avoid snappage.
Maverik
There shouldn't be any strength difference between galvanized and non galvanised (mechanically speaking). If you're using wires just make sure you use proper precautions they tend to keep a lot of energy when they break as I'm sure you're aware if you've done a fair bit of winching before. discomikey
for the cost of a synthetic rope, i would be extremely tempted to buy one now, as although its a bit more, theyre one hell of a lot safer! i went for synthetic striaght up with my winch when i bought it from David Bowyer, this rope isnt too expensive and a friend has ot on his 12,000lb winchmax winch and loves it. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100ft-10mm-Synthetic-Winch-Rope-Hawse-Hook-Dyneema-SK75-self-recovery-4x4-/251239968732?pt=UK_Lifting_Moving_Equipment&hash=item3a7f11afdc
Bowie69
Given that intended use is likely to be occasional and for pulling logs over rough terrain (rather than pulling the vehicle, where the rope doesn't actually move) I'd be tempted to say steel rope is probably the way to go here actually. Any idea of the spec ...?
