bigbeast
After reading what a pig this job could be I was well prepared to start with. but have hope people, i can honestly say it was a piece of cake, took about hour and half. With no fancy pullers or expensive tools. Just to give you a heads up a 16mm socket halfords professional range is the perfect size to fit in the top of the drop arm to drive the upper cup out using a bolt and washer method of tightening the socket down into the top of the drop arm. Didnt even have to drive the new cup into the arm. dont know it if was the kit (all makes), It was a snug fit and only needed tapping home lightly (greased it before hand) Guess my experience of this job has been easier than most lol Happy days
jbs
If you'dve had the disco drop arm conversion like I and a few others on here have done then you'd have been finished about 1hr 20 minutes earlier. As all you would've needed to do is change a TRE and not that daft ball joint lol.
smokinv8
Ahh yes Jbs but not if you have a 6 bolt steering box like i found out after buying the conversion bits from Gwyn. Im just waiting to change it out when the current one fails and i put a 4 bolt in thats sat on my garage floor. But like bigbeast i just purchased a kit and changed the balljoint in situ to get me through the last MOT. Worst part was the useless bit of wire that Wouldnt hold the gaitor on and i broke, so i just used a zip tie in the end.
jbs
Hmm my apologies Neil, that's a bit of a bugger then, I had no idea that the 6 bolt box had a different splined shaft compared to the 4 bolt one-the last 6 bolt one I had was years ago, It was all of the faffing about that we've probably all been through at one time or another you've mentioned in your post that drove me to find a better solution
bigbeast
jbs. thats on my list to do when this one goes. for now i just needed to ge this done and keep it cheap. to be honest wouldnt mind doin it again wasnt so bad. yep that spring thing is a complete waste of time. holds the boot on until you actually move the ball joint, then it just slides up. it does sit ok when drag links bolted on as it compressed it all down but still not exactly a tight fit
