cackshifter
Among my dependents I have Defenders, a 90 and a 110, both 300tdi so not spring chickens. The 110 is showing signs of needing a new n/s CV, and I have a feeling that the other side will probably also need it having travelled the same distance; the 90 having gone further will probably also need a couple ere too long. I have read with a bit of alarm the posts on CVs and realise the ultimate solution is Ashcroft and don't doubt it's a fit once and forget solution, but the bottom line is prohibitive. At the other end of the scale is Britpart, which is probably neither fit once nor forget, but costs less. I'm aware of the weakness of the later CVs and shafts. What I'm wondering is what would anyone recommend as being the 'good value' solution between those 2 extremes? I am looking I guess for something that doesn't cost as much as Ashcroft (which is probably overkill for me), but will be reliable for a while. And has anyone else tried Mr Van Snorkle's suggestion of taking the sharp radii off? I think genuine parts are heading towards Ashcroft territory in cost. smokinv8
On my 200tdi i fitted Britpart CVs and they have been good for 2 years so far with a fair bit of offroading thrown in. Now whether it makes a difference or not i do have lockers fitted.
mikec
I've also got a britpart front cv, I'm sure there's a post/topic somewhere that says the britpart cvs are actually quite good
cackshifter
Maybe I'm doing Britpart cvs an injustice then. The trouble is unless you know what's good and what's not you tend to avoid the brand.
CwazyWabbit
I too have 1 britpart cv and it's done about 18000 miles including some off roading and is doing fine so far.
CwazyWabbit
Have a read of http://www.nickslandrover.co.uk/rrc-front-axle/ It's Snagger on heres experience with Britpart CV's
Maverik
I managed to find some genuine LR ones for not a bad price. they've got about 15k on them just now and they're happy. Mav
cackshifter
I notice LR direct do Hardy Spicer ones (supplied via Britpart) at 116.55 (+VAT) or genuine Britpart at 14.93. You can buy a lot of Britpart ones for the price of a Hardy Spicer. So the Britpart ones do look like a snip, as they say in A&E. I suppose, let's face it, you arent risking much money, and you can afford to change them more often
Aragorn
Going by cost alone isnt the best idea... If they fail in a catastrophic manner and leave you stranded, the fact you can afford to fit 10 of them for the price of one genuine becomes less relevant? The previous posters seem to suggest that they are at least equal to standard parts though.
CwazyWabbit
Wholeheartedly agree that price alone shouldn't be the deciding factor. The following graph from ashcrofts testing shows a pattern part tested as well, this is said by some to be a britpart CV. I can't however find a substantiated reference to that fact. Would be interesting if Dave were to comment on this thread. I don't see it hurting his sales as I'd argue he is selling to a different market. His test rig
CwazyWabbit
Just found reference to it possibly being a Bearmach one http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=27204&p=270942
gadget
I've recently gone through the process of CV joint hunting and opted for a pair of Bearmach. The Ashcroft reference and the fact that I didn't find anyone who had a bad word to say about them were the main factors.
cackshifter
Even if they are Bearmach against Har Spicer the price is still pretty keen at 25.74. I agree going by cost alone isn't the best idea, but if you ignore cost you end up back at Ashcroft,it's the only 100% solution. If there's not much to choose in performance between the OEM and various pattern parts you might as well save your readies. Anything to be gained by cryogenic treating or taking off the sharp corners, or is general advice just wap it on?
