A precautionary tale (bushes)

Recommended Posts

Thought it time to replace the suspension bushes on my 110 as the front end had started to 'chatter' with a hint of the 'death wobbles' developing, so picked up a pile of Britpart bits which the dealer had, and pressed them in.

That was in Februrary this year, and I've done only road miles since then, and not a huge amount, but the steering has rapidly deteriorated to the point where the vehicle was occasionally scary, any slight bump in the road sufficient to start uncontrollable wobbles without warning. So I changed the front (very rusty) shocks, and things got worse. Changed steering damper this week, and it became lethal, as the 15 year old Bilstein damper was obviously doing more good than the new Armstrong one.

Pulled off the panhard rod to have a look, and both bushes have totally collapsed, the rubber more or less shredded. I've temporarily put some cheap poly bushes in the panhard which has dramatically improved it, but I can still feel the suspension trying to 'escape' so checked the radius arms and it looks like they've collapsed too.

I guess you get what you pay for. But I wont be doing it again.

Ordered Superpro and will fit next week.

I don't need to tell you the moral of this story.
