mikec
Don't like starting these threads, whe they've been covered to death but as insurance seems to change so often I'd like the latest advice Been trying to get quotes for my lr, just had one of 1500, that's 4.6, ms, ashcroft, winch. 5k miles/year, 2000 of them for business use, 8 years no claims and 30 yo. That was with flux. As far as modified vehicles go its not really too extreme, so who are you guys with.
Hybrid_From_Hell
Academy Insuranxce in Staines and speak to Scott, he insures mine, They know what they are doing Only squeak to Scott tho ! Say hi to him from me Nige
dave1607
I changed from Direct line to Sureterm. Sureterm are the broker, the policy is with Highway. Modifacations didn't seem to phase them at all, I asked about different wheels, a snorkel, swing away wheel carrier and a winch but they said that none of them would effect the price. Obviously none of those were engine mods but might be worth a ring, I can't remember exactly but I think I paid around £230 fully comp. mikec
Just spoke to scot, he's gonna get back to me. I think the issue is the business use part to be honest. Annoying as I only average about 1 weekend a month as business use but typically being honest bites you in the ass!
jackmac
Adrian Flux for me. I have had a couple of good quotes from Scott @ Academy in the past 2 years, but flux seem to allow for me being fairly young a bit better
Aragorn
Dont see why business use would be a problem, cost the missus nothing to add it to her modified car policy with Flux, and last year Admiral claimed adding business use was one of the reasons why my online comparison was cheaper than the renewal they'd sent me (the renewal didnt have it)! western
NFU for me, even covers my trailer attached or not but only to a nominal sum, & allows for my employers business use.
mikec
Yep used to be with Nfu until they pretty much doubled the policy one year. One insurer did mention that their underwriters didn't insure for business use in my postcode ! Also academy seemed to think it may be a problem having business use and a 4x4! Will try sure term and admiral. Cheers guys
studmuffin
Problem is we all scratch around to find the insurer with the best price which will cover our mods and various restrictions, and dont realise how utterly useless they are until we claim. Sureterm / Lancaster as brokers are pretty much the pits and together with Enterprise as an insurer, for my two pennyworth, should be avoided at all costs! Think it may be worth talking to an old fashioned insurance broker with an office that you can visit! My employers used to use " A Plan " near Redditch, before directed by our group to change. I may well try them or another independent when I have to renew. Hope you get sorted. Cheers Barry
A Twig
I used Glynwood brokers, they have a specialist 4x4 section, though you have to ring them, rather than do it online. They're aren't the most organised bunch when dealing with paperwork etc, but they are amazing at dealing with underwriters. I had a stupid minor incident, which while I was at fault, there was zero damage. They spoke to the underwriters, and convinced them to treat it the same as a not at fault, which meant I got a 5k limited mileage, social domestic and pleasure policy, with club organised offroading non competitive events covered as well, all for just over £300 a year fully comp - brill! disco_al
I used Glynwood brokers, they have a specialist 4x4 section, though you have to ring them, rather than do it online they get my vote too - Sureterm (who i was with last year, and who give discount for Discovery Owners Club members) wouldn't quote me this year with the extras i've added , Glynnwood gave the best quote of everyone on their specialist 4x4 policy (which is underwritten by LV) - over £200 cheaper than the likes of Flux and NFU, even with nearly 20 years of NCB
gadget
Problem is we all scratch around to find the insurer with the best price which will cover our mods and various restrictions, and dont realise how utterly useless they are until we claim. Listen to the man. Flux for example are impressively incompetent when handling claims, and just wait and see what your money bought you if they hand you off to their 3rd party claims managers. I got the quotes from the usual suspects and got their policy documents to compare. Went with NFU in the end. Not the cheapest but the policy inclusions are excellent for the outlay. Renewal isn't for a little while yet, so i've no idea if they will be generous or up their prices.
reb78
Business use was a problem for a lot of the 'specialists' that I called a few years ago with my 110 and that is much LESS modified than many on here. I too have gone with NFU over the others because they just seem to have no problem with the use of the vehicles for normal things. For me they weren't that much more expensive than some (and they were cheaper than most). 34 years old, full no NCD, unlimited miles (also unlimited business for me and the other half), 200tdi retrofitted into a 12 seater 110 (insured as such) and it comes to just under £400. As Ralph says, trailers are also covered. Most of the 'specialists' try to sneak you onto a classic policy where you don't accrue a NCD and you have limited miles with no option to add business as it is a classic policy. Sureterm didn't understand that it was a daily driver. Footman James didn't realise that they wont insure mine as a 12 seater even though that is as it came from the factory - I asked them to check (as I do whenever getting quotes) as we have had problems with this in the past and it is sods law that they will turn around and tell me I am not insured on the one occasion that I have it full up in a year! B reg 90
I have house insurance with NFU. The reason is I checked the small print. You get what you pay for. NFU house insurance is better, but you pay for it. Take your pick, pay your money. It depends on your circumstances to what you want and why. I've also had an interesting experience with Flux re them rejecting a policy after 2 months as they decided that they didn't like my non claims discount. Much arguement later I got my money back, but it was hassle. Also had an issue with a comercial motor vehicle insurance policy provider. Snakes is all I will say. You get what you pay for in my view. Disco is now insured with NFU. Adrian
Daan
What is also an interesting statement is 'agreed value policy'. The flux version of agreed value means they set a value to your car, which is an absolute pittance and it is take it or leave it. Not what I had in mind when I went for agreed value. Bowie69
Mandy @ Academy is also very good and knowledgable.
Aragorn
Its fine saying "you get what you pay for", but it depends just how much extra they want. A couple of years ago i ran an online comparison for my daily driver, cheapest was 800quid, next cheapest was 1500 and all the other offerings were 2k+.... So irrespective of how carp the company with the cheapest quote was, i essentially had no option. Paying 1500 or 2000+ instead of 800quid would never have been justified by how much "better" the other companies were over the one i went with. Maverik
I have all 3 of my road worthy trucks with NFU now, very impressed with service and also agree you may "seem" to pay a higher premium, but when you look at what you're getting compared to a lot of other companies NFU on paper look very good. - also you deal with a local agent, as apposed to a call center somewhere, that actually means a heck of a lot to me. def130
On the last 4 years of owning the 130 SW only mange to receive a quote from Sureterm, all the others don’t recognize the car. Fully comp, 8000 ml a year, agreed value of £7500 - £387 a year not bad
Steve King
I have just taken out a policy for my Defender TD5 with Liverpool Victoria. £250 (ish) a year fully comp with 9 years NCD. My renewal from Adrian Flux was slightly cheaper, but I may occasionally (once or twice a year) use my Defender to get to work and LV include this as standard, Flux don't. mikec
Well tried loads and loads of insurers, most just never got back to me, just waiting for Nfu, to come back, had one from trust, who I have public liability with, but they want an engineers report first, that's £1k. Best quote so far is Swinton, surprisingly, 840£.
