Boro
Which 5 speed manual gearboxes can be fitted in place of the 4 speed manual in an early classic with rover v8 engine, i dont mind having to fabricate brackets or creating a custom bolt in cross member or alter/replace the floor but i dont want to have to cut the chassis as its a galvanised chassis, nothing wrong with the 4 speed but i would like something thats a little quicker to change gear and with better ratios
Eightpot
You can fit an lt77 or r380 no problem. The later gearboxes used holes in the chassis that were already in place on the early rangies I recently fitted a disco r380 with gearbox crossmember which slotted straight in to my 79 rangie If you use a disco box you may need to cut the centre tunnel a bit so the gearstick can poke through. If you have a 2 door a longstick lt77 fits without cutting the tunnel.
SORNagain
I'm putting a short stick LT77 in mine at the moment. Looks like it will fit OK but as Eightpot says I will have to chop the tunnel. Don't forget there are a different number of splines on the clutch if moving from the LT95... Glad to see the back of the vacuum servo! Boro
Cheers guys, which is the better r380 gearbox to go for? (seem to recall newer boxes being better due to improvements), meant to say in my first post im not too bothered if i need to change the tunnel, dash and heater, the vehicle is far from original already, cheers for the heads up on the clutch im not sure what clutch it has at the moment as its got a 4.2 from an lse but i would guess the friction plate will be the earlier type then to match the lt95
Eightpot
Good point, you'd need to get a box from a v8 disco. No need to mess with heater or dash etc as the gearstick comes up further back not forwards by about 4 inches. The other good thing is getting rid of the horrible multi link handbrake mechanism and swapping it for the nice simple disco one. ten times better. SORNagain
Well, I got my LT77 in today. I did have some problems with the gearbox mount on the LT230 side though, which might be relevent to you Boro. When I put it in the mount didnt look like it could support much, and when I bolted it to the rubber mount the webbing fouled the handbrake mechanism. It's in the left of the photo. Fortunately I had another gearbox with the other bracket (right) which seems to fit OK. Taken from this angle the difference in heights is evident: I'm not sure how the other bracket could have ever fitted, but of course I wasn't paying any attention when I first took it off! Anyone know what is going on?
Simon_CSK
If I remember properly I think you may need to keep the tunnel cover off the donor gearbox. but that will not be a problem installing as the fittings are the same.
