Slack in drive train & Solid Flywheel Clutch ?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Yes I know it could be 101 things but I have some (a lot) slop in the drive train, as I accelerate in whatever gear I am in, if I take my foot off the throttle I can feel a thud/Clonk as something catches up, and the same if I accelerate again, I know the clutch is starting to slip and have to feather it if accelerating hard so time for a new one also there is a bit of vibration creeping in. The clutch was like it when I bought it a couple of years ago but is now more noticeable as the engine is up around 170 BHP. I have put a set of Bailey Morris prop shafts on it (very good) and I am also thinking of going down the Solid flywheel route, (cost and reliability) and wondered if anyone out there has come across a decent heavy duty clutch kit that is not £750 and is the Britpart (yes I know) really not worth putting on speaking from their own experience not just the Britpart slagging waggon?.

Thanks for any advice Richard

If its a td5 then I would stick with the DMF, our 130 has the rakeway solid flywheel and its horrible. My 90 is chipped to about 190 bhp and I have a DMF and a Britpart £60 clutch was fitted over a year ago with no issues and it does work hard for a living. The 130's gearbox on the other hand is not showing signs of enjoyment being behind a solid flywheel. Steve

Thanks to you both,

Hi Western, I did put TD5 in but its hard to see, Hi Off Road ToadI looked at the Rakeway hence the £750, plus £250 fitting, the other option was a duel mass flywheel and the rest but that is working out at £1500'ish. It is a hell of a lot of money, hence seeing the Britpart compleat heavy duty set up for around £300 inc vat got me wondering, I mostly do long runs but have a heavy twin axle trailer that I tow sometimes. I just need the thing to work right as I use if for my work and the van weighs in at around 2 1/2 tons loaded.

I've read your opening post 4 times, can't see Td5 in it anywhere,

had assumed it might be, but better to ask than give incorrect info.

thanks for the additional info, at least the bushes can be eliminated from the thought process.

I've been told the Britpart solid flywheel kit uses a Rakeway flywheel, which might be worth a look...

Swapping the DMF for a solid unit can give a bit of chatter and increased drone/resonance from the engine at low RPM's, but its typically fairly easy to drive around. Both my cars have solid flywheel conversions and the only time you notice it is if you apply throttle in too high a gear with the RPM's down below 2000. That said, the reason i went solid was because the DMF was broken, the solid was cheaper and it allowed me to fit a larger clutch.

I dont think i'd pay MORE money for a solid flywheel, especially if it still only allowed use of the stock clutch.

Hi Steve, The £1500 was the quote I got for Genuine L/R D/M Flywheel, friction Plate and cover plate fitted by a free lance L/R Dealer near me, the £750 plus £250 fitting was from Rakeway. £300 inc Vat was Britparts, I will go and have a look at Ashcrofts site. This is the good thing about this site, a lot of people have a vast store of Knowledge, to stop people like me cocking things up. I thought Rakeway was the Mutts Nutts, but now I find different, it is a shame it's not an easy clutch to change, unlike my sisters old Viva HB, had that down to 45 mins. Showing my age

Tyhanks

Thanks Old Hand, you have now made the decision harder again  I will have another look around, I am not worried about the rattle in nutural, but I wonder what trouble Stev had with his in the 130 ?
