jackmac
Hi all, I've had both front hubs off for a few bits and bobs. One of them has gone back on fine, drive flange and all. The other one, I cannot get the CV shaft to stick far enough out of the stub axle to fit the circlip? It definitely had a circlip when I removed it, and I haven't removed the stub axle on this side. I've tried with the drive flange backwards to get some leverage on it, but even that doesn't fit. So it can't be that the hub isn't seated properly etc, because it's just not far enough out of the stub axle. Have tried putting a drive flange bolt into the CV shaft end end giving that a good pull - no luck. The wheels are pointing straight ahead. Any ideas, or do I just need to keep pulling on the CV shaft until it comes out a bit?
landroversforever
What's been changed?
jackmac
On the side with the problem, just wheel bearings. Not touched swivel housing or stub axle, which is why I can't understand it...
landroversforever
hmmm.... not sure then!!
CaptCarrot
I've just had this and for me gently driving forward a few feet and turning the steering wheel moved the shaft out enough for me to get the shim and circlip back on....hopefully that doesn't cause any damage, I didn't do more than 6 foot back and forward a few times... jackmac
Excellent, that's why I love forums! I will get everything else back together first, then give that a go
Simon Smith
Did you get the inner wheel bearing fully seated? If it's very tight you may not have got it fully home. I drive mine in with a hammer and one of the old races and you can hear the note change when it's seated.

Should be obvious when they are fully seated and if they were the only thing changed then a likely suspect.
jackmac
Do you mean the race? Yes, definitely. As I said above, it can't be anything to do with that, since that would not affect how far it sticks out of the stub axle?
landroversforever
The drive flange position is relative to the hub, the relationship of that hub face to the stub axle is set by the bearings.
jackmac
Yes, but as I said, I can't even fit the drive flange backwards. When it is on backwards, it just sits up against the stub axle, doesn't touch the hub at all.

reb78
If its the circlip, just put a bolt in the end of the shaft to pull it out far enough to get the circlip on.
jackmac
Apologies for the long delay. Been sorting a few other bits. Driving the car back and forth, lock to lock, has not helped unfortunately. It's still not going on, I am just about to remove the swivel & hub as a whole and see if I can push the shaft through, refit circlip, then refit the hub etc! I have not got high hopes, it's a very metallic sound when I pull on the CV shaft and it goes as far as it can. It's definitely hitting something, which must be the swivel housing? Pictures below showing what I mean about it being relative to the stub axle.
landroversforever
I'm still thinking the bearings aren't seated properly. Would the flange go on if the hub was further inboard?
daveturnbull
There's only a tiny slither of thread showing on that stub axle, should be much more. As Ross says, bearings not seated properly, or maybe the hub seal is sticking out?

Mine are the early type though.
jackmac
Took it to a local land rover specialist to confirm what you had all said. By the time I got there, he removed the drive flange cap, gave a tiny pull on the shaft and just slotted the circlip on I think a few miles of country lanes must have freed it up somehow. The reason there is so little thread left, by the way, is that they are TD5 stub axles with old style hub nuts etc. I am 99.9% certain they are correct
