I I am a new b on the site

My son and I have tried to replace the head gascket on a k series engine 1800, on completion the engine would not start, after trying and checking various things we did a compresion test the two outside baralls were ok the inner two read 60, I could understand this if the engine had been running for a few hundred miles and then blew, could really do with a few suggestions don't really no we're to go now

The tappets are hydraulic. Could the oil have drained out of them while you were doing the head-gasket change? Without oil the tappets won't properly convey the lift from the camshaft to the valves. Once the air escapes and the oil finds its way into the tappets they pressurise and normal service is resumed.

Alternatively, they sometimes "stick out" and this won't then let the valves close fully.
