Cloud
Hi all, So...I'm going to become a first time Defender owner and I've seen a 110 dormobile for sale that I'm interested in. Some advice would be really useful as it is a bit unusual. First it has a 2.8i BMW engine. It is the M52 used in the South African models but I don't know, at the moment, if this is an original model or if it has been installed at a later date. I have inspected and rust seems to be under control on the panels and underside and the dormobile roof conversion looks new-ish and reasonably well fitted. On the surface it looks to be in good condition with 40,000 on the clock. 2 The big question is price. I don't have any experience with this sort of conversion and £16000 seems very high. I've seen an original SA 2.8 go for under 10k so the extra 6k just for the dormobile conversion seems high. What does anyone think? Many thanks in advance
tacr2man
the vin will tell you where it was built and with what engine , so thats a start , re value how longs apiece of string , value on landrovers is a almost impossible task, without a thorough inspection , and the financial condition of the tow parties involved . Might be worth introducing yourself
SvBeek
Where are you located? In SA?
Happyoldgit
Dormobile conversions are a bit niche and tend to attract higher prices.
Cloud
Thanks for the advice. The original idea was to have a 110 for the dog. He's a Newfoundland and needs loads of room. When we saw the dormobile conversion we thought we could kill 2 birds as we also enjoy camping. We've seen the car at Nene Overland and I've heard they can charge a bit of a premium; hence the question. I think I'll probably put in an offer and see how it goes. The BMW engine sounds fun! I'm in the UK
tacr2man
You will pay a premium for the set up as proposed, the BMW engine performs well, but fuel consumption might well be almost V8 territory . One of the UK Landy mags did a road test of one a few years back. Is it a full conversion or just a dormy roof ? if so it is not a proper dormobile as they were with cooker , convertible seating etc . Tanuki
If you do buy it, I'd suggest a proper multipoint closed-loop LPG installation should be high on your 'to-do' list !!
Happyoldgit
This one?
Cloud
Cheers for the LPG advice, Tanuki; I'd thought about it but not seriously. It's not going to be everyday transport so mpg isn't too high on my list of worries but you never know. Once I start driving it I may not want to get out of it... Happyoldgit - that was fun typing - yes you found it, what do you think? Tacr2man, it's just the roof conversion. I've seen a fully spec'd dormobile - amazing stuff. Thanks for all the comments
SvBeek
If you buy it and want to swap the engine for a 200tdi, let me know. I need a decent petrol engine for my '85 110 because of changes in the dutch road tax legislation, next year it will be unaffordable to keep driving my 200tdi around. Maverik
If money's no object... then I'd go for it, but I think it is certainly overpriced for a non standard 110 engined vehicle (petrol at that) and its only had a roof conversion. You could get a nice millage Td5 for 10k easily and pay somone to do a dormobile roof conversion for 6k and you'd probably get more than the conversion too for that money... With a Td5 you can opt for a more economical drive or something with a bit more nuts, by getting it mapped... - I love my 200tdi's but after driving/towing with Td5's i think they're the muts nuts engine/gearbox set-up. now I'll climb back into my hugely overpriced Camel 110... Especially when you can buy an elevating roof for not a lot and just bolt it straight on: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UK-POP-TOPS-UNIVERSAL-LAND-ROVER-110-also-fitsFORD-CONNECT-ELEVATING-ROOF-KIT-/151045736085?pt=UK_Campervan_Caravan_Accessories&hash=item232b070695#ht_499wt_1172
