LT95 problems

Hey all,

I have a 1984 Stage 1 which has an annoying issue with the gearbox which is a standard LT95.

Basically it will change gear beautifully all the way up the gears but when shifting back down from 3rd to 2nd it will grind and refuse unless the trucks travelling around 20kmh. Double declutching solves the issue but isn't really ideal for people whom I ask to drive that aren't that savvy.

I've looked across the Internet and there are a few threads on various LR sites which outline the same issues. They all say synchros or selector mechanism faults. What I want to know is if its possible to find replacement parts as I haven't found any (yet).

My thoughts were if I can get the replacement parts then I can send it to my trusty landy specialist and get them to replace the damaged bits. It's going in for a general check up and to sort a few gremlins next week so it may well need a follow up visit which would be an ideal time to sort it.

Or how difficult is it to work with the LT95? The fellas at the specialists told me that an auto out of an early disco (kick down cable one) can really wake the truck up. Is it bad that I'm tempted? :D

Help and input much appreciated.

Josh

Hey Steve,

Yup I'm running the same oil as is in my engine (20w-50 mineral)

I thought synchros more than selectors as well. Problem is I have no idea if I just need a synchro or other associated parts. I can't find any decent, definitive info. Maybe an RRC manual would have a gearbox diagram?

Doesn't the standard series 3 parts manual cover the Stage1v8?

Fairly sure it does.

Reading the parts book it looks like you need FRC5931, though it's only described as the 3/4 Baulk ring on the websites. PM me if you don't have that chapter of the parts book and I'll email it to you - though I'm sure it's on the interweb somewhere.

Ah, thanks for that Gaz! i will have a look round on the web. Does anyone know of a supplier for parts on these boxes. Looked all through craddocks etc and couldn't find anything for 2nd gear..

Holy cow! That's a kit and a half! My budget won't stretch quite that far haha but thanks, they really exist! Is it a particular complicated box to work with? Could be a good winter project methinks

I've never worked on one, maybe you could read through the manual and get a feel for it?

I suspect the Aussie crowd may sell you the individual parts, though once you start stripping a box you find you need loads of stuff, bearings/circlips/shims/gaskets and it soon adds up.

Hmm that's a valid point gaz. I may just need to read up on gremlins manual to see what wil need to be replaced in the repair process and once the box is open I will see what else may need replacement.

Tackling a remove, overhaul and refit of an LT95 is not a job for the faint hearted, due mainly to it being a big heavy unit with the main box and transfercase cast as a single piece unit, but they also have a tedious complex assembly procedure that if you get it wrong can lead you to lose the will to live.

Don't say that Bill! I like my life!

But seriously, is it going to be better if I just get a specialist to swap the synchro in? I'm always up for a challenge but the truck needs to be ready to go whenever it's needed so downtime may not be ideal.

I found the part on rimmerbros. It's a genuine one for £18. I may order that one

Garry, I don't have an issue with double declutching, having previously owned 2 other s2a's. it's more for others who I want to use it and because i want to bring it back to original spec.

Bowie, don't you tempt me! :D There's a clean tidy looking auto box for $300 just round the road for me!

Go on, auto it, you know it makes sense, just get all the cooler pipe work and shifter at the same time ;)

Off-road, there's no competition between auto and manual, 2 feet, three pedals = awkward!

You wouldn't happen to be referring to the three hands, stacking all the shims, bearings and gears and hoping it doesn't fall out when you remove the dummy shaft method of assembling the TC gears would you?

Well, unfortunately that is only one of the many traps awaiting the uninitiated !
