weasel_110
The sticker underneath the box has gone...I had a 200tdi fitted in my 110 a few years ago from a Disco 1...I had a prob with the transfer box jumping into neutral, so they were going to sort that at the same time, then, I was told I had worn splines on the gearbox output shaft (I did see the wear on the shaft and it was very nearly terminal!) so a different gear box was fitted...The ratio issue only came to light months later when I gave my 90 owning mate a lift and he remarked that it was revving too high! When I looked for the ratio sticker on the transfer case, it had been scraped off...I am asking for advice now as have just come back from Scotland and motorway driving is a chore (to say the least!) with the high revs....50mph (2,500) is more bearable! What do you guys think?CheersGary
FridgeFreezer
What was your 110 originally? You can work the gearing out with the gear ratio calculator in the technical archive.
ejparrott
Sounds almost as if you've got a 1.6 t'box in there from a 2.5na
Baz2236
Stupid phone You should have a serial number on your box you can then confirm the ratio from that on the ashcroft site it lists all the prefixs
weasel_110
Thanks Baz! will crawl underneath for another look when it stops raining Ha ha! Fridge, it was a 2.5TD...I havent got a clue what the ratio is...was wondering what the bus should be doing re revs/speed?
western
2.5TD should have a 1.410:1 transfer box
weasel_110
Just been perusing the Ashcroft site Western, think some overtime is required!!According to them, the norm for the Defender is "The ideal target RPM is 2,700 revs at 70 mph in top gear. " No wonder its hard work above 55!!!

weasel_110
UPDATE: Serial numbers found... LT77 sn 50A030370 LT230 sn 28D066990C 22C=1.222 ratio According to the Ashcroft info, I have the correct ratio transfer box in...AIthough when asking this question years ago,I remember a Landie mechanic saying that it may have the wrong gear set in... They say.."This is a very popular gear set, especially for those with a TD5 90/110 or Tdi which revs excessively on the motorway. This gear set will enable you to raise your transfer case gearing by 15%, by replacing the gearing in the exising 1.410 ratio transfer box with new 1.222 gears, as used in the Disco. This will not only reduce your revs but also reduce noise. This change will not effect Low Range and will leave your Speedo reading true. This kit offers a simple and effective change to your vehicle and there is nothing to go wrong." So why is it revving so high?

Sounds almost as if you've got a 1.6 t'box in there from a 2.5na Just spent an hour or so on Ashcrofts ratio calculator......And the result is.... I have the gear set of the N/A 110 (12D) fitted in a 28D LT230.... EJParrott, you were spot on! Q1. Can I swap the cluster in situ? Q2. Anyone know where I can have it done Nr Chester? Don't mind a journey!
ejparrott
I've been there before..swapped an na for a tdi 1.4 was the solution for that one because it was a heavy tow-er and a farm vehicle. I'm afraid I can't help with changing the cluster though, not done one yet.
