BigBlue90
Hi guys, Got a good question for you all. Is it worth it to install a dump valve on my new turbo? Now I know the valve lets off excess pressure so it's gotta help the life of it? But does it have any downsides?? Is it easy to put on and set up properly? LandyManLuke
A dump valve on a diesel is pointless. There's no butterfly valve to get in the way.
western
only for petrol turbo engines, next to useless on a diesel turbo.
Bowie69
The waste gate lets off excess pressure, a dump valve is for petrol engines, basically during gear changes where the butterfly can cause the turbine to effectively stall and you lose boost. BigBlue90
Right, so this does nothing to benefit the engine performance wise or health of it what so ever. So it's basically just for noise, nothing else.

Simon Smith
Well not quite. Actually it won't even make a noise, as without a throttle butterfly it will never operate, I suppose you could argue that as it has mass it will actually make the vehicle slower!! muddychris300tdi
A couple of years ago I spoke to two defender owners who had electronic controlled dump valve on there 300tdi's and they both said that it made a difference especially while towing. Simon Smith
Physically impossible for them to make any difference. They are there to stop the turbo stalling when you close the throttle, without a butterfly there is nothing to make it stall in the first place, the only diesel Landrovers with a butterfly were some of the series ones which used it to create a vacuum for the servo brakes before they started fitting a vac pump. Incorrect, the newer engines TDV6 etc also have throttles. It is also possible to make the turbo stall on a defender. This is due to the pressure difference across the turbo. As they have wastegates already would a dump valve not help to stop this and keep it spinning? or could it not react quick enough? TheRecklessEngineer
It is also possible to make the turbo stall on a defender. Under what conditions? Interested - I can stall the turbo on my Land Cruiser, but never managed it on an LR.
jad
On the 2.2 defender engine if you load the engine up and then put the clutch in quickly the turbo stalls. I said it was possible, I didnt say it was pretty Probably possible on the 2.4 puma as well. Jad
TheRecklessEngineer
Aha, I see. I've never driven one of those!
