1991 Defender with lift type door handles

Hi All

I'm currently looking at a H reg (1991) Defender. It has a 200tdi engine, but has the old style lift up door handles.

Possibly ex-military vehicle? Any other explanations?

Could be. Most military ones had lift up door handles, though not with a TDi engine.

There are civilian spec military 90/110's with 200tdi engines, but with normal push button doors.

At that age the original doors would long ago fallen apart so probably a retro fit (all they could find/like that type)

Military have two piece doors with sliding windows.

That 90 has the early type wind up window doors, so the would be pre 1988, most likely it's had a 200tdi conversion done too. probaly a ex=2.5 n/a diesel or petrol originally, the VIN will tell you the original engine & fuel type.

But it's on a H plate (1991), so probably retro fit doors?

It's advertised as a 1991, and it's on a H plate.

it's had early doors fitted then, H prefix reg should have the black push button handles

have got the chassis number ? if yes PM it to me & I can check the model year & other details.

Yes, well. Never assume everything is as advertised... Best to check.

My 87 had the lift up handle doors, judging by the pictures these have been swapped from the push button type. My OE ones had the burst proof striker fitted as opposed to the standard type as shown in your image. I know you can spec replacement lift up doors with locks suitable for the standard push button strikers.

All the other wee tells seems to say its of a 91 period, I think I've always secretly liked those type of doors, my 90 originally had them, and I kick myslef I didn't replace them when I bought new doors.
