Dave 63
Hi , the Landy I've got has silver chequer plate on the bottom of ghe doors and mud flaps. What kind of paint would I use to paint it black? I was going to use hammrite, but sure if that would key properly or look good. Ideas please Thanks
pat_pending
You'll need an etch primer first, then spray with whatever colour you want. Clean it up first with steel wool and wipe over with thinners or panel wipe. Get both the etch and the top coat from the same place to avoid any paint reaction from incompatable paints. Motor trade paint factors would be best but Halfords do etch and most top coats. There are lots of reasons not to use Hammerite on a Land Rover, it looks carp being the most obvious. Lewis
I too agree Red scotchbrite pads are a good alternative to wire wool I recommend Du Pont etch primer, it's excellent, if pricey
yalan
Just gone over mine recently. Prep work as above but I used Halfords truck bed liner spray for the finish. Can't tell you how long lasting / hard wearing it'll be but so far so good. http://www.85ninety.co.uk/cars/landy90/chequer/chequer.htm

studmuffin
I did mine exactly as Pat said. The only difference was that I gave them a rinse of vinegar( mild acid ) with a scotch brite pad before using the etch primer. Not sure that it made any difference at all. In hindsight it may have been better to use acetone. I also had some top coat spray cans made up the same colour as my Landy. Looks pretty good.
