Lost of drive

Recommended Posts

While driving I suddenly lost all drive in Hi and Lo have changed a UJ but went to move and now nothing but a whine and rumble noise, I do have drive in Diff lock Hi and Lo so I would dismiss the clutch, thinking T/Box problem what is the cause and how do I fix it. The T/Box is 1.4 ratio from a '95 MPI Disco.

First check the drive flanges - that's the centre part of the hub you can see in the centre of your wheels with the five bolts. Under the rubber boot/hub cap you should see the drive shaft sticking through the hub - these are located with splines, which gradually wear down eventually disappearing leaving you unable to move.

If this has happened, your driveshaft will be spinning inside the hub drive member, but your wheel won't turn. Ten minute job to replace.

Broken halfshaft is also easy (if it's the rear axle), bit more involved on the front, but to be fair you would have probably been driving the car when this happened, spinning wheels over rocks/mud or something and got some sudden grip which broke a shaft.

If the splines have gone on the drive flange, while swapping the flange is a quick job, you need to degrease, clean out and regrease the hub - it'll be contaminated by the swarf and shards of the splines from the flange.

If it's a half shaft, then it's also a quick job unless the stub of the shaft is stuck in the diff, but again you must drain, flush, refil and again drain, flush and refil the axle to get rid of all the fragments that will otherwise wreck the diff and its bearings.

Doooooohhh - now you've jinxed it.. :P

It's a quick thing to check first anyway - just pop all the rubber hub caps off and look for anything weird - if you can get someone to look at the hubs while you try to drive (not in difflock) that will help

Yes - the axle is fundamentally the same. There may be differences in the hub flange and outer shaft - early Discoverys have a solid hub dome and sub shaft to the CV joint, while Defenders and 300Tdi Discoverys have a floating stub shaft with splined drive flanges. The brakes may be slightly different if you have a 110, but not so different as to make any difference for manuals useage.
