For the most accurate way to do this you're looking to put your alignment marks where the screwdriver moves up and down quite a bit in relation to very little crankshaft rotation (somewhere like 45 to 75 degree past / before tdc for your initial go) then mark the midpoint. You can then bring your second go marks a little closer in with a second mark on the screwdriver

If you use a solid stop, a hollowed out sparkplug with a stub welded into it, it is very accurate indeed, and the flopsiness of the screwdriver doesn't come into account anywhere.

Thanks I'll remember that one defiantly ... something like a nut welded in the end with a bolt welded to it as a stop (set to the right depth)
