robertspark
For the most accurate way to do this you're looking to put your alignment marks where the screwdriver moves up and down quite a bit in relation to very little crankshaft rotation (somewhere like 45 to 75 degree past / before tdc for your initial go) then mark the midpoint. You can then bring your second go marks a little closer in with a second mark on the screwdriver
Bowie69
If you use a solid stop, a hollowed out sparkplug with a stub welded into it, it is very accurate indeed, and the flopsiness of the screwdriver doesn't come into account anywhere. Thanks I'll remember that one defiantly ... something like a nut welded in the end with a bolt welded to it as a stop (set to the right depth)
Bowie69
....and I got curious, yes they are made commercially, e.g: http://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/sum-900189/overview/ Lots of images of them, including DIY versions: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=%22piston+stop%22&espv=2&biw=1680&bih=888&tbm=isch&imgil=BjutEvp--Yip3M%253A%253BgVM68FxPmXB_nM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.motoiq.com%25252FMagazineArticles%25252FID%25252F2284%25252FPageID%25252F4012%25252FHow-To-Degree-Cams.aspx&source=iu&pf=m&fir=BjutEvp--Yip3M%253A%252CgVM68FxPmXB_nM%252C_&usg=__t6C0TAgBPsLKydg3CEDF8s2Fwvg%3D
robertspark
Wow, didn't realise that there could be such a large market for them, with the shear number of variants in the google image links .... one required for every tool box? elbekko
OK, I guess that'll be next port of call then. Doesn't look too difficult when the plugs are already out anyway.
