Steering with a bang

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

Just a quick question I have a 03 110 defender.

At low speeds and tight turns it feels like something in the front axle of maybe even from the transfer is binding up and when it gets to a it's max tension and slips it shudders the entire car. Has anybody had this before or has an idea to help me because I'm really stumped.

Thanks

If you force it to full lock you will get a slight shudder as you are working hard against the power steering pump.

You could also check the ball joints are OK but if they were on there way out the thing would wonder a bit on the road even in a straight line.

With the shuddering it does sound like the center diff is engaged but you can test that as already stated.

It could also be that the steering mechanism is catching on something either the tyres on the radius arms or part of the mechanism itself. When I refitted by steering guard after replacing the TRE's the drop arm of the steering box was catching one of the sides at full lock. Only slightly, but enough to give a stiff patch and a clunk as it slipped over the edge. A little modification with a file and there is now no problem. If you put the front axle on stands and get someone to turn the wheels lock to lock you can test for this. If it is only when moving then it will be something internal in the drive train.
