Which intercooler???

Recommended Posts

Changing the intercooler won't make it any faster in standard form, maybe the injectors need testing/servicing or replacing & check the pump timing is spot on, new fuel & air filters will help.

Thanks Western,

I thought a larger intercooler gives more grunt, I have heard up to 30-35% more?

A good uprated intercooler will undoubtedly make the vehicle faster, even without tweaking the pump. This is because the cooler air is more dense as as such more oxygen rich, allowing the fuel to be burnt more completely.

I you "tweak" the pump without uprating the intercooler, the exhaust gas temperature (EGT) will rise and can cause damage to the engine.

The best option is for a larger intercooler and fuel pump tweak. One won't work as effectively without the other.

I was given a very good bit of advice by a well-known specialist recently. ALWAYS ask how the intercooler is made. Some cheaper models are glued together, which dramatically reduces their ability to extract heat. So, always check to see if it's been brazed and welded. Allisport and Jeremy Fearn's are about the best on the market and their pump mods are highly reliable.

I have also been told that the genuine Landrover intercooler is of VERY high quality and was advised (again!!) to retain it over buying something larger if the quality wasn't there. The decent suppliers will give you time to talk. My experience, although limited, is that J. Fearn and Allisport are highy professional. I bent Allisport's and Jeremy's ears something rotten and they gave me very good advice.

Van Aaken told me that they recntly had a guy who had installed a large intercooler, but couldn't get the extra power as the pump had ben adjusted VERY badly. He left with a big smile on his face...

Once again, before you consider any mods like this, ensure you've got a good base to work on first. A healthy engine and drivetrain will respnd FAR better to these mods than an unhealthy one.

There are excellent tech archives here to do the pump mods yourself and it's not that difficult to install a new intercooler, even the larger ones, if you can make brackets and re-route the pipework.

I'm a lousy mechanic and elected to let someone who knows what they're doing loose on my 110. The intercooler is still on the wish-list though....

Thanks Guys for all this info. I am going to spend a few hours in the garage this weekend doing some minor jobs on the LR. I don't know how you lot find the time to do some of the bigger jobs. What with work, wife, kids, dog and house, I'm shafted before I even swing open the garage door!

As you saked which intercooler, and the other issues have been covered i could highly reccomend Allisport having had one on my old TD5, was excellent quality and the service recieved was first class.

Thanks for that, just had a look at their web site.

Si, what you say about LR intercoolers is very true. JE, when tuning Tdi's gas flowed standard intercoolers rather than replacing them. I also know of people who've welded a pair of standard I/Cs together with excellant results.

I, however, am using both an Allisport I/C and rad and am very pleased with them!

ive seen other threads somewhere on this site showing the fitting of a Td5 ic on a Tdi. the Td5 ic looked as large as aftermarket ones, might be avalible cheap from someone tweaking a newer motor?

Possibly but the pipes are on the wrong side for a Tdi so you need to do some plumbing and I think that's messy. I'll be getting an Allisport one some time but at the moment I just watch the EGT gauge closely when the boot is well down :)

Oddly, since tweaking the pump, I have found relatively little difference in EGT (previous max was about 620, I have seen about 650 since tweaking the pump but only on one or two occasions) the engine just seems to pull easier and doesn't need full throttle.

Thanks, but £550 fitted before VAT!

Did you buy yours separately and fit it yourself?

No, supplied and fitted but it wasn't that much (not quite anyway ! ). I was unsure

about the associated pump and turbo tweeks to do it myself and at the time I had

enough spare cash so just went for it.

Jeremy Fearne had his wicked way with my 110 a couple of years ago and I can honestly say it's been a far nicer motor to drive since, much more torque as well as top end power, not that I drive it like a boy racer but it doesn't run out of steam going uphill now and towing the caravan is almost a pleasure.

It's also surprised a few Saxo drivers at the traffic lights

Jeremy came highly recommended and I certainly haven't been disappointed; from the feedback I've come across Allsport seem to be just as good a choice, for me Jeremy was fairly convenient and his loan car meant we had a nice day out in Derbyshire to boot.

http://www.brunelperformance.co.uk/ also do a very good intercooler range.

I have an Alisport one

very good BUT and it is a big But!

in order for the intercooler to appear to make huge differences

altering the FIP to max does make it go better intercooler or not

this also had the effect of 120miles on a tank of fuel driving at 70mph on the M5 home. when in fact the increase wasn't as noticeable as one might expect.

I readjusted the FIP myself to previous known (marked settings)

then made my own adjustments with an EGT gauge fitted.

I'd suggest buying a full width one and doing the FIP yourself.

Stephen try removing the plastic collar under the diaphram

then try it, watching the EGT though.

I have a brunelperformance cool charger (water cooled intercooler) on my 110.

Jon Norman of Brunel gave the pump a slight tweek and the performance was transformed, giving loads of power flexability throughout the power range, making driving very relaxed, rather than always having to anticipate the next gear change. Fuel consumption is much the same if not a little improved.

I intend to fit an EGT gauge soon to see just where the peaks are, however with a 3" S/S exhaust system allowing reduced back pressure, I don't expect the temperature readings to be that high.

Headhunter,

You've hit on an important point there.

I spoke to Scorpion Racing during my search. Although I couldn't speak after the shock of hearing their prices, they did give me one good bit of advice.

They recommended that before I start playing with the engine, the exhaust should really be modded first to reduce back pressure.

Looking on past posts here, it appears that a decent large diameter exhaust will definitely allow the engine to spool up quicker. Scorpion wanted over £500+VAT and that was an unfixed price wth the labour charge increasing if they had any problems removing the old exhaust!!!!

Twisted Performance claim a 15bhp gain for their system.

Although I opted for a modded pump, my thoughts are still with a large diameter S/S exhaust and fitting it myself as I cannot get the notion out of my head that I'm wasting the power mods by leaving the standard exhaust alone.. I'll wait until the current genuine one wears out first.

Then there's the intercooler.... Gas injection....

Alisport said the 110 was a money pit and that you'll want EVERYTHING done. How true...

"effect of 120miles on a tank of fuel driving at 70mph on the M5 home."

Do you mean you get an extra 120miles per tank?

No I mean the tank was bone dry after 120miles!

filled it to the brim before getting on the Motorway.

free flow exhaust is easy on a L/R just start removing boxes.

I removed the catalyst

then the rear box then changed the mid box for a straight through one.

My exhaust cost £100 any more and your being ripped off.

no boxes on th eexhuast = a too loud and obtrousive L/R.

FIP mods are Free/intercooler if you want £300ish

more imprtant an EGT gauge £100 and after a number of years all is well

with no engines woes.

ps running 18psi boost was 21 for over a year.

Bloody Hell!!

I found that with my Allisport intercooler and plug in tuning box i returned the same, if not better MPG despirt having many many extra horses to play with, and using them regually!! :D
