Engine Number change

Recommended Posts

Back around 1990 I had the engine in my 90 changed by a local Land Rover specialist. For some reason - I don't recall now - I never got around to getting the V5 changed. Now I want to sell the vehicle and it is obviously an issue. i don't have the paperwork (two house moves later) and the garage has gone in the meantime. VOSA require proof to change an engine number - how should I approach this?

If it makes a difference, the engine was swapped for a similar Land Rover V8 (ex range Rover to be precise) from a vehicle of about the same age: C reg I think vs. my D reg though I don't have any proof of this. (Matches engine number in V8 database)

When I changed an engine a couple of years ago I had to submit the V5 with proof of change of engine, capacity etc.

Since I did the swap myself I didn't have the suggested paper work such as a receipt for the work carried out. After a quick phone call to DVLA (I realise you mentioned VOSA) I found that they would accept a letter from a garage or motoring body.

The AA and RAC would charge for an inspection and could confirm engine number but would not confirm capacity.

I asked at a local garage and they were happy to help. They checked the new engine number etc and provided me with a letter confirming the engine fitted (I think they charged £20). DVLA accepted this and were happy to make the changes to the V5 (although it took a few attempts so do check the V5 when it comes though).

Hope this helps.

If you ar doing a straight engine swap, ie the capacity doesn't change, you generally don't need proof of the swap. I have just received the v5 back yesterday from my partners 90, it was originally a 200tdi but had the 300tdi factory re power kit fitted 15 years ago. I had never bothered to tell them about the engine number until last week. The v5 came back with 300tdi engine number instead of 200tdi number no problems, no questions asked.

i always used to just put "UNKNOWN" as engine number in the past - I don't think it is an actual requirement to have an engine number.

Although it was a fairly recent engine change, I didn't need to supply any proof. I just filled in the V5 with the new number and senit it to DVLA. It was returned without question.

I had more problems with the insurance than with DVLA. They wanted receipts and an engineers report.

Its a bit luck of the draw, as suggested just put new number , and tick box and send , they may well just send back OK especially if it nothing else changed at same time eg fuel or capacity . Then again they may want verification , so you have to go to garage or MOT

authorised by DVSA to see number and do you a letter saying what engine it is and number . HTSH

Just for anyone reading this post in the future:

I changed in the Engine number on the V5 and sent it off - with just a Post-It note attached saying similar type of engine, same capacity.

New V5 returned without question - thanks all for the advice.
