As there seems to be quite a few of these that come up from time to time, thought it may be worth starting a thread?

Maverik spotted this one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181671283005?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D181671283005%26_rdc%3D1

Are we ok to run with such a thread?

This fella says he's listed it 4 times due to non-payers!!

Thought selling VIN & V5 was illegal, the registration number & V5 document belong to DVSA not the owner so effectively he's trying to sell Government papers.

Ebay have the report facility, one of the options is

prohibited & restricted items

government & police related items

government doc's ID's & licences

would have thougth that covers registration documents & vehicle reg numbers

I disagree. If you want to be a Police office - go sign up. Or if you really must, report something yourself. Publicising bad things only ever results in ****ing things up for everyone else and is frankly a stupid thing to do.

I also reported to eBay and AVCIS last night, so maybe it was the number or reports that got it pulled? Not sure if the AVCIS report would get looked at out of hours so it's possible the eBay auctions get pulled automatically after a set number of reports?

Sorry you feel that way I naively thought that the sale of vin numbers, registration plates and log books means that potentially if your landrover is stollen and then retagged and sold on may have benefitted the wider landrover community of what seems to be a very easy to steal and regularly stolen vehicle. Maybe the view is that you're just an idiot for letting it get stolen in the first place and good luck to the enterprising individual and those in the supporting industries in a capitalist economy.

Maybe the issue is what personal feelings of what is a infraction, misdemeanour and felony?

Ebay don't seem to really care about the sale of illegal items, including the sale of VIN's with no chassis.

I'm beginning to think it is automated and has a threshold for how many reports before something gets automatically removed.

Notice how there is nowhere whilst reporting an item to enter any text? It's all drop down boxes, nowhere for you to add any supporting information. This smells of a system without any human involvement. If it's automated it would make sense to have a threshold before removing things to prevent malicious reporting of auctions.

I've had an eBay auction pulled in the past (turned out the ethernet over power adapter I was selling had a recall notice issued). The email I received when it was pulled looked like an automated email.

Dear *************(***************),

We appreciate that you chose eBay to list your listing(s). However, we have removed your (s) because it breaches our Recalled Items policy.

320637941561 - 2 x Comtrend DH-10PF Powerline Adapters

Why did we remove your listing?

Please note that a very small number of the Comtrend DH10P and DH10PF powerline adapters supplied with BT Vision could have a manufacturing defect. The defect may cause the mounting holding the cover of affected powerline adapters to become brittle and loose therefore they have been recalled. Also new products are being sent to the customer.

In accordance with our User Agreement, items prohibited by law or by eBay policy are not allowed on eBay.

eBay doesn't permit the listing of items that have been identified by UK Trading Standards and the Irish National Consumer Agency as hazardous to consumers and therefore subject to a recall.

eBay also doesn't permit the worldwide postage of items that have been identified by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission as hazardous to consumers and therefore subject to a recall.

We understand it's frustrating to see your listing end. Please be assured our actions are focused on our policies and we're not singling you out. We apply the same rules to every listing we look into.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: If your listings breach eBay policy in future, your eBay privileges could be suspended. We value you as a member of our community and wish to continue this relationship, so we must ask you to refrain from further breaches of the User Agreement and eBay policy.

Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter.

Regards,

eBay Trust & Safety

You miss the point by a country mile.

If you want to report - go ahead. But why do you feel the need to then post about it too?

All this does is provoke stupid legislation, checks and restrictions that will then affect lots of people doing nothing wrong at all and still won't stop criminals.

And I think you've missed the point... If like Barry suggests it is an automated system and it needs x number of reports to get it flagged then why shouldn't we post it up, allowing people with time and inclination to report also, believed you me, if you've been screwed out of money or have had vehicles stolen and re id'd you might feel slightly differently. If I can "help" authorities stop fraud and good people getting ripped off, then I'm going to, even if its something as small as an eBay ad being removed, a LOT of innocent and naive people use that site.

Bit off topic but as this seems to be an emotive issue. Are there laws in place to prevent this sort of thing already (selling vin plates, number plates, and a log book without a pile of bits that could constitute 8 points of the original vehicle that could be assembled by a willing buyer to constitute a vehicle)? I would argue yes. So no amount of new laws are going to prevent the issue are they?

Given there are a million and 1 laws at present most of which are unenforcable because they unfortunately require a monitoring resource too that I'm sorry you will not get under a shrinking state budget, sometimes it's useful if you feel so strongly about it to assist the system

Given its a democracy and not an autocracy the power is probably best carried forward by consensus? Or assistance by consensus. Also sometimes called lobby groups, which is why there are sometimes so many daft laws that have entered the statute books because of the views of a small number of people who could be bothered to lobby (or vote) and the majority are apathetic or feel powerless.

The flip side is are you happy to be sold a ringer? Or more importantly, are you happy if you were ever involved in an accident and it was the other drivers fault and they were found to be driving a ringer and hence now no longer insured so you are not paid out through no fault of your own (or in fact their own given they may have bought their car in complete ignorance of the issue)?

Having now it appears tested the reporting system it seems that maybe it is removal by consensus maybe this is the way to go given its democratic?

You or anyone else could also ask for the thread to be removed or closed or me banned, did not start this to potentially cause disrepute for the forum, thought it was for wider benefit, no offence taken any which way

Interesting points, I don't think the anti is really about not wanting to stop you reporting more not interested and therefore doesn't want to see it.Thing is if there is a permenant thread, those that want to get involved can, and those that don't, don't need to look at it anyway!

My vote is for a fixed place thread that can be added to, maybe pruned from time to time. If this is not possible then keep posting if there is a continued interest.
