GBMUD
So, following yesterday's excitement at curing the vibration I now have a leaking transfer box. The input oil seal was new Contico yesterday. I am not 100% where the leak is, but this bolt has oil under the head as if oil is coming up the threads, does it go through the transfer case and into the sump, and should I therefor be sealing it?2005 Td5 R380/LT230 from a Disco1ThanksChris Edited to add - not a brilliant picture. That is from the front, the flange on the rear of the R380 and the front face of the transfer case. The transfer case sump is just visible at the lower left of the pic. reb78
That bolt does go through into the casing and the hole is open into the cavity. Its easy to strip the thread on the casing for that one if you are too keen with the spanner! It looks wet above it though so my money would be on the intermediate shaft o ring (or the hole in which the IM shaft sits having elongated thus making it impossible for the o ring to seal)
GBMUD
Thanks. Best see about sealing that and see if the leak persists. Do any/all other bolts do the same thing? Is there some recommended sealant? Hylomar, silicone...? Cheers Chris
reb78
I used ptfe tape on mine (but mine still leaks from higher up). I don't think any of the other low bolts go into the cavity from memory.
Anderzander
This is the o ring fix: http://forums.lr4x4.com/index.php?showtopic=55338
GBMUD
I am rather hoping it is not O-ring related as removing the box again will not be any fun. Chris
