Bowie69
Go through with a very thin bit first?
Lewis
Run the drill in reverse. The cast is that soft you'll still be through in no time
discomikey
gauge still has to arrive as of yet, its coming from 'Murica, most likely "via taiwan" its the only one i could find in the 52mm flavour which displayed a "smart but not too chavvy" etiquette. the same gauge is avaialable quicker and cheaper with red/blue backlighting but that looks "well flash innit"
Lewis
I'm just using a K-type thermocouple and hand held reader from RS. I have got a panel mount reader with peak hold etc etc but I'm yet to get around to fitting it I think it was this one http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/temperature-sensor-accessories/7204385/
reb78
Is the cast ok to tap then? Thick enough and strong enough? Or should you get a nut ' 'welded' (or whatever you do with cast) above the hole in order to fasten the thermocouple into?

Exhaust manifolds can be a bit weird. Mine was fairly soft, others rock-hard, decent ones can be filled with iron which is dead soft, along with iconnel, hastaloy, nimonic and so on, all less than pleasant. Lewis
Yes its plenty thick enough for the thermocouple shroud and olive. Mines similar to the one below http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/thermocouples/3971264/
Boydie
Good luck, I'm sure that you'll do good job.
muddy
Might be an idea to check the accuracy of said gauge before you start drilling holes. I had a McGill motor sports one with 6mm probe after a few years it stopped working ( suspect thermocouple ) I have recently bought a glowshift 9 colour black gauge this has come with a 3mm probe and seems much better and responds much faster. EGT gauge certainly makes for interesting viewing. Will.
discomikey
I shelled out for an auto meter (not the cheaper auto gauge) one as they seem to have a good reputation
CwazyWabbit
any idea how thick it is? all my bits are really sharp, if i know how thick then i can stop just before i break through to remove all swarf, then reapply grease to the bit for the last bit .... and you've not discovered a way to correct that?
