Bowie69
That doesn't look bad on the water pump, they do sit deeper than on the alternator.
western
as above I suspect the groove width is the same, IIRC you've got etc7394 fitted now which comes up on Gates website as a 10mm & 13mm wide belts gates part AVX13 x 1000La 13mm wide x 1000mm long [for fan] & the top 2 in the link are Alt belts 10mm wide http://www.gatesautocat.com/drive/LANDROVER/Defender-110/LDH/21G/09-90_12-94/17636 maybe live with the 10mm wide belt, the 13mm may sit to far up the alt pulley groove
need4speed
Maybe I'm worrying about nothing then. I will put some tension on the belt and try and take some closer pics of the waterpump and crank pulleys. Maybe I could put a little tippex on the belt to make sure the belt isn't "bottoming out" on the pulleys??
western
not much of a comparison but my 200tdi Alt/waterpump/fan belt sits deeper in the crank & water pump pulley's than the alt pulley photo looking up from below engine I run a 100amp marrelli alt without any problems
need4speed
Would it be worthwhile either having my alternator pulley modified to accept the 13mm belt, or as suggested earlier having one made to accept the bigger belt? Would I be correct in thinking that the larger belt would offer a bit more traction considering I'm using a 120A alternator?
western
A new purpose made pulley would be better than a modified one,I think the wider belt would be good to, more surface area one the belt sides
Lewis
Need for speed, sketch up the dimensions on the pulley you need and I'll see if I've got something suitable
need4speed
Thanks Lewis. Il have a look this morning
need4speed
Right. Had a look at the pulley and it appears to be 60mm diameter with a 17mm bore. And of course to fit a 13mm belt.
vulcan bomber
Right. Had a look at the pulley and it appears to be 60mm diameter with a 17mm bore. And of course to fit a 13mm belt. Bore will be 11/16 of an inch
need4speed
Even for a Bosch alternator?
vulcan bomber
I would expect so.... It's only the sticker that makes it a Bosch alternator.
need4speed
Right, so if Lewis can't help out with a pulley, does anyone know where I could get one made up?
vulcan bomber
Yeah.... I can make you any size you like.....
Lewis
The only one I have with the correct bore is 75mm od, twin groove and 11mm
need4speed
No worries. Thanks for looking Lewis Bomber if you could turn 1 up for me that would be awesome!
need4speed
Just a little update on this. Vulcan Bomber very kindly turned me a custom stainless pulley for my Bosch alternator. He has made this suitable to accept a 13mm v-belt. Not only does it look stonking, but I'm hoping that by being able to utilise a 13mm belt rather than the 10mm, the extra surface area traction will help me a little seeing as my alternator is 120A.. And I've just checked it against the Dayco 13mm belt I have for the power steering pump and it fits perfectly!
vulcan bomber
It's only mild steel mate, get some paint on it won't you..
need4speed
Lol I'm sure you said you were doing it out of stainless. Makes no odds. It's well machined and fits to a tee..
vulcan bomber
No its to much like hard work in stainless and it's not a very good material for pullys. Mild steel or cast iron all the way...
steve b
Nice work VB :i-m_so_happy:always nice to see a bit of lathe work , and yeah steel or ci for sure I reckon that will drive the alt. pretty well cheers Steveb
