elbekko
On my P38/D2 steel wheels, the valve stem is very loose in the hole. On all except 1 I can push it through by hand. This causes them to leak, unless the tyre is at 2.5+ bar, not so ideal for off-road. They're currently the normal snap-in type. Would a bolt-in valve like this or these help? Or do I just need a different size, if that even exists? And if the bolt-in ones are the solution, does anyone know where to get some that aren't chrome? HoSS
I always thought the push in rubber type were better. The whole body seals into the hole, and takes some abuse. IMHO the bolt in type could suffer from a o-ring failure, or be damaged by knocks... Sounds like you just have the wrong size.
elbekko
So there are actually different diameters? I've only ever seen one bin of the things, only difference being length.
L19MUD
Definitely two different diameter valve stems. I know the thicker of the two are fitted to the old 'Rostyle' range rover rims Can't comment on the P38 wheels though sorry
L19MUD
You should need a valve tool to pull them through, not by hand
elbekko
Aha! Yeah, I know you should need the tool, that's what tipped me off initially that something was wrong. And then also the leaking. I'll go look for some bigger valve stems on the interwebs then.
elbekko
Err, I found this page: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=208 Which states there are two diameters for passenger cars, 0.453" (11.5mm) and 0.625" (15.8mm). 4mm difference seems like a lot. The current ones very loosely pop in.
ejparrott
Take it to a tyre garage, sounds like you've got the small valves in big holes, they should put up quite a fight, mine do
landroversforever
The smaller size in the bigger holes would be very obviously wrong I'd have thought.
elbekko
The smaller size in the bigger holes would be very obviously wrong I'd have thought. That's my thinking as well. I just can't imagine any other reason why the hole would be oversize. Still, 4mm difference in diameter seems like a lot, even if they're supposed to put up a fight. ejparrott
pop one to one side and measure the hole in the wheel.
elbekko
I was hoping to avoid doing that more than once But yeah, it'll be the best option I guess.
elbekko
Just tried to have a measure. Didn't find anything sturdy enough high up enough to jack the tyre off the wheel, so had to go for a risky measure, holding the valve stem while measuring Seems to be 15ish mm, so you guys must be right. I'll order up some of the bigger valve stems.
