steve200TDi Posted January 11, 2019 Author Share Posted January 11, 2019 So the rear axle is back on and it now sits back on it's four wheels. Now to address the bent tubes! The passenger side took the brunt, with the drivers side looking a little bent from previous outings and so I will replace both. With all the rivets drilled out. I could then trim the roof to access the tubes to be cut out. I will then decide to patch the holes or trim whats left of the roof back further. I also took the roof scoop off. But we do have a new member to the team, so as they say.....many hands make light work! Progress has obviously slowed, but I'll hopefully get back out there later in the year for a race. Don't worry! All good, and remember, sleep is overrated! It is my first and to be fair she hasn't been too bad! She sleeps for 3-4 hours between feeds, so only a couple of feeds during the night! In the mean time I started to grind off the welds and make it smooth again ready for the new tubes. Old bent tubes New bent tubes without the third bend! Still more making good needed, but I have the new tubes ready now which also need to be trimmed! steve200TDi Posted June 26, 2019 Author Share Posted June 26, 2019 So it was time to make the new tubes fit. I started by using a hole saw to get somewhere close. This was done by eye and a bit of guess work earing on the side of caution not to cut them to short. Using all of that I got somewhere very close which only needed a bit of filing on one tube and a slither being cut off on the other, so I was very happy with that! The trusty pillar drill Some notching The new notched tubes against the old. Then it was time to do final fitting to make them as close as possible. I then got the welder out and did some practice on the tube off cuts to get the right settings and make sure I was happy with it. I cleaned up the tube ends with sand paper, cleaned them with solvent and tacked them into place. Then welded them in! They are fairly symmetrical, so I was happy with that. I now need to add some tabs for the roof skin, then I can paint it and patch the roof up and add a new roof scoop. Then I can move on the next job which is steering system overhaul. I bought on! Yes, I have the Discovery set up at the moment and yes it is pain free when changing ball joints. I've been looking at different ways to quicker up the steering and thought I would give this longer defender drop arm a go. Yes, this is 20mm longer than standard so should reduce my lock to lock by half a turn at least. Annoyingly they don't seem to make discovery style drop arms in the longer length, so I thought I would give this a go as it's a relatively cheap option. steve200TDi Posted April 6, 2020 Author Share Posted April 6, 2020 A small update of stuff I've done before lock down happened! The roof all done, all new panels and roof scoop glued and riveted! I then trial fitted the longer drop arm with the aim of turning the steering and seeing what actual difference it made. I've procured a defender swan neck with and without the steering damper attachment. You can see here I fitted the one without the steering damper attachment to the bone stock defender drag link. This is just for mock up purposes and I will be finding something a little stronger when I go racing (which could be a while as all the races have been postponed due to MUK stopping all insurance/licences). The first stumbling block I got to was the drop arm is now fouling on the drivers side steering guard bracket, so that will need to be trimmed to allow me to swing the steering and redesign the steering guard support bracket. I also came to the conclusion that I will yet again repair the bonnet and leave the shocks exposed in a bid to a) increase visibility and b) it'll be lighter! and c) get out racing sooner* *that was before the lockdown!
